Vortec head/intake

480$ for a complete pair then 160$ for the edelbrock vortec manifold. I was reading somewhere that the manifold for the vortec heads is like 400$....the vortecs seem like the best deal for the power I want to make. Can I do that....get the Vortecs and the edelbrock manifold and just bolt them on?

Does the casting number matter? Are all vortec heads the same? Is it more desirable to just buy them new for 500$ or if I could find used ones cheaper is it ok?

The intake that costs $400 is the Scoggin Dickey lower base intake for tuned port injected engines. If you're going carbed then all you need is the less expensive Edelbrock or something similar.

As for the heads you want to stay away from 12558059,a s its a 97 only 305 Vortec head with 1.84 valves.

The one to look for is 12558062 it has 1.94 valves and a 170cc intake runner.

If you plan on using a cam with more than .450 lift you will need to get some machine work done to the heads to fit larger springs.

I'm going carb so I can just use a cheap manifold.

So ANY cast except that 305 cast is acceptable as far as vortecs go?

I was looking at these heads:

I just wanted to be sure about the castings.

Thnx 4 the info

10239906...96-up...350.........."Vortec 5700", "L31", 64cc chamber,
170cc intake port, 1.94"/1.5" valves

And they're ready for a bigger cam. You should ask the seller what size the spring pockets are in case you may want to upgrade springs later.... Stock I believe was 1.250.

There are over a dozen auctions on ebay for Vortec heads, alot used and taken straight off of trucks. Does the casting on these matter at all? Will they all perform the same pretty much stock? (those I listed above had work on them) but in general the casting doesn't matter as long as it's not 305?

The only bad thing here is that these heads were notorious for cracking and buying them off ebay may end you up with a set unknowingly.

Otherwise the Vortec heads are great out of the box as long as you use a relatively small cam profile.

How much do a pair of Vortecs weight? I'm thinking of buying them new instead of dealing with magnafluxing and such...even if I got a deal where I get my money back if the heads are bad I don't want to go through that hassle. Can I order the heads through my local Chevy dealer?

I recommend you order them thru www.sdpc2000.com They offer them with the bigger springs all ready to go. These are the latest design combustion chamber and these heads will outperform most aftermarket heads out of the box.

Ye, what he said. Get the ones already beefed up. I don't think they cost but around 600 complete.

Id buy those ones you had posted. I ended up paying $400 for a set off ebay that had the same work done to them (valve guide work, springs) and they looked like they had about 14 miles on them. No problems here. Run the Performer RPM intake over the Performer intake though, thats just personal preference though.

Aight, well those heads are "new" so I wouldn't have to worry about cracks. When they say "new" do they mean rebuild and like new, or are they new heads they did work to? Cause I wonder how they make any money if they bought the heads "new" and not used and just cleaned them up nice. Vortecs sound like the best deal for the money I can put out. Thnx for the info.

I bought me a pair of these, I have to get them assembled, but they sound really good. 450$ and they should be stronger, and flow better then stock vortecs. With these heads as a base for my motor hopefully I'm on the right path....
