Vacuum timing advance adjustments

One of my friends is having problems with the timing on his car. Which way do you turn the vacuum canister to advance or reduce the timing? its at 16 with the line hooked up and the car keeps detenating.

If the cannister goes toward the radiator, it advancs. Toward the firewall it retards. Viewed from the top, turning distributor CCW advances.
