Upgrading rear-end
Ok.. so I am plannin on buying a Torsen T2 rearend..
I relize that I will be needing 28-spline axles.. but what about everything else?
What about brakes.. won't I need new ones? Could I just rip the disc (my car currently has drums on it) brakes off of the car I get the 28 spline axle off of, and just use that? They will bolt rite up to my car, rite?
Anything else I will need to change over?
Thanx everyone,
Matt

Torsen T2 isn't familiar to me...
is that just the differential...as in the posi unit?
why not just look around for a camaro in a junkyard that has what you want.
all the Z28's and Trans-ams will have posi units and should bolt up to everything...brakes, ebrake, shocks...everything
being 16 i think it would be a better more cost effective way to get it on the road.

Not all Z-28's have posi.. mine doesn't..
The Torsen T2 is a posi differential unit.. used in like.. 89 'Marrow's (I believe.) and in like '93-present Camaro's.
Plus, the local j/y's have ****ty-assed rearends.. like ****ty gears, drum rears, etc..
9-bolt? What did they come on? How much they cost? Where could I find one?

you can swap in a 4th gen rearend and all you have to do is change the proportioning valve so that the disc brakes will work
I did this about 2 months ago, i love having posi, disc brakes are SOOOOO much better than drums, and the rear ends are very available and came w/ a bunch of different gears

i ended up spending a little more than i should have on my swap but here's how it broke down for me
$300 for rear end
$160 for brakes and misc other parts
$30 for prop valve and new brake booster
i've been told that people have gotten complete rears w/ brakes for around $3-400 so it just helps to look around, no one that i talked to had brakes on the rears around here so i was kinda stuck
everything bolts in exactly how it comes out, the rear end is just a little (4 inches) wider than the 3rd gens.
good luck

The 9 bolts came in some 3rd gen f-bodies, not many though. Iroc's, GTA's and formula 350's are the most likely to have them. I just bought an 88 formula from a guy about 2 months ago for 1500 bucks. I really lucked out on this baby, it has 4 wheel disc brakes, the borg warner 9 bolt rear end, 350 tpi, and an aluminum driveshaft. I thought there was some chance that it was a 1le package in a formula, but it only has single piston calipers on the front, and there is no 1le rpo code, oh well.

I said I was afriad to look and then you show me the horror
And that is a decent price that what scares me.I think Ill just put the 427 + TH-350 combo together with a posi 10 bolt I have. Just to see how long a stock 10 bolt will hold 600+ ft/lbs of torque. Then I will get a real rear end
Hopefully when the 10 bolt goes it doesn't take expensive parts with it
From what I've seen 2k is pretty much what your gonna pay for a 12 bolt or 9"....seems like trying to convert a different 12 bolt or 9" to fit a 3rd gen will end up costing the same and being more work.

sorry about that
but yeah 2 grand doesnt seem TOO bad just because the chances of ever wrecking it are slim to nil....and then possibly still on the other side of nil. I agree it is expensive as far as things go but you also have to realize what a huge component of your drive train it is.....in retrospect how im ever going to save up for one is still beyond me but oh well.....

Then Im gonna go to the drag strip, find a 3rd gen that already has a 9" and pull his before he notices and be gone with it
Then its just a matter of switchin in teh ratio I want. Im looking at 4:88's I think Im gonna go with them.
