700r4 with a lookup switch. Overdrive rules. Got one from Mad Dog Lou rated to like 700hp for 1495. 400 would require different driveshafts and I think trans tunnel mod....

700R4 if it's a daily driver and you want the OD for highway use. TH400 is overkill plus it's not an easy swap. TH350 would be a better choice if you don't need the OD and an easier swap.

Re: turbo400 or 700 tranny?

go with the 700r4..probuilt has a god beefed kit out...i got mine built for 500 hp, it came to like $1400 with 2800 stall converter....th400's are way overkill, the internals are so heavy, they actually take tons of power away from the motor by absorbing it...if you don't want overdrive, which i don't see why you wouldn't, go with a th350..also another choice might be a T56 swap..or a built g force T-5 swap..

Install a 200-4R. Similar gear ratios to the TH350 but also has the overdrive. Lots of GN cars use this tranny.

If you don't want a computer than you can count out the 700r4, they need a computer. A 400 turbo and 350 turbo do not need a computer, (they also have the same case, 400 is beafier and can take more power, but usually come with a big block bell housing.) you will need to change your driveshaft, make up a new mount and rerout the fluid level dip stick. It is a real pain I put a 350 turbo in an 87 ss monte and wanted to kick my own *** for not just putting in a 700r4 and using a computer. Also you probably have a 3.73 rear like my monte which means with a 350 or 400 turbo without the 4th gear you will probably top out at about 115 mph, though you will get there fast.

onlything on a 700R4 that needs any electrical signal is the lockup, there are aftermarket kits, or you can run a toggle switch, the 350 and 400 do not use the same case, floor mods might be needed to fit the 400, and there is no such thing as a big block bellhousing on chevy bellhousings, small blocks and big blocks(along with 4.3 v6, marine 4 cylinders, strait 6's, ect.) use the same pattern

700R4 has the torque arm mount as long as the rear tailshaft housing is from a F-body, also, the 700R4 has the lowest first gear of all these transes, so it will feel the fastest when you launch

Re: turbo400 or 700 tranny?

oh yeah and your computer from the 2.8 should run a 700r4, you might need a chip to upgrade it but I don't think so, I am about to find out, my friend has an 84 2.8 with a 200r4 and I am about to put a 350 with a 700r4 into it. The 700r4 really is a very nice tranny they can take a lot of hp and having the 4th gear is great for top end and gas millage.

Re: turbo400 or 700 tranny?

Sorry if I wrote somthing that is not correct, I was under the impression that the 700r4's could be made to perform better if you installed a chip in your computer it changes the pressures or somthing so I feel that a 700r4 would perform better given a computer to sort that mess out. I am still learning myself I know a great deal more about motors than transmissions and it seems that in this area I was misinformed. So I recant my earlier statements.

Re: turbo400 or 700 tranny?

the TV cable is what controls the pressures for the gears (why you have to have it adjusted properly else the thing does not work well at all) the only computer controlled part on the whole thin is for the TC lockup, which there are aftermarket products you can buy. Summit has the switch for like $75 or whatnot. plug it in.. and away you go... no computer.
