transmission won't shift
transmission won't shift
Hey all, I have a 1989 Camaro RS with a non-stock 5.7L v8, I posted a while back and everyone told me I needed to have the transmission replaced, I was wondering if maybe I could just have someone replace the 2nd gear bands (I think that might be whats causing the problem) or something cheaper than replacing the whole transmission?
Basically, it shifts fine up until it gets ready to shift into 3rd, then it just revs up past red line, won't go any where (that is if I just put it in drive), if I put in overdrive and I let it shift up till 3rd, it'll stop at third and rev high, but if I hit the gas relatively hard, it'll get up and go up to about 50mph but it redlines, so I have to let off the gas..
Anyone got any ideas?

Will the trans shift into 3rd at part throttle or not at all? A few guys from tgo including myself are trying to figure out a no 3rd @ WOT condition, but all of our shift completely normal at part throttle.

i had a friend whos mom had a crappy dodge neon, the tranny went three times. so on the third time we drove the car to a toyota dealership in first going 20 down 35s and she gave them that car and bought a carolla. is it your second gear that redlines at 50? cuz i know my first gear goes to 4500rpm and 35 mph and my 2nd gear shifts at 70mph. if i stick the shifter in low and redline that i can get up to 40/45 mph in first so are you sure your still not in first if your redlining?
Yeah, I'm sure, I can feel it shifting out of first into 2nd, then it goes to shift out of 2nd into third and revs up high.. and when I manually shift, it leaves 1st and goes into 2nd but if I put it in Drive, it revs up and redlines, but if I put it in overdrive it will jump and haul butt when I kick it down but I can only go up so far before it redlines and then I have to let off the gas. I don't think its hitting 3rd or 4th, I think its all just 1st and 2nd (mainly 2nd).

the only temporary fix i can think of is to put more tranny fluid in to increase the pressure on the gears. but in the end it probably needs to be rebuilt unless you like driving around at 50 all day using 2X the gas...
You cannot overfill it or it might spray out. There is no cure but to rebuild the thing because it will fail you at the worst possible moment. I changed fluid on mine and it was fine till I was 500 miles away from home and it died.
yikes! 500 miles, wow thats a tow bill! anyways as in temporary i mean to get down to your mechanic to avoid tow charges. i don't know about you but where i live they're thieves whe it comes to towing charges.
When I was at home I could have gotten it fixed for cash and cost of parts. When I was away, I paid full price. GM wanted twice what the rebuilder would have charged so I went with the tranny rebuilder. If I had made it home, I could have got it rebuilt even cheaper.
Wish I knew some place near by to get mine rebuilt cheap
so far I'm looking at $350 for a used one.. and thats me putting it my self in the parking lot of my apartment complex lol

my tranny does the same thing. i noticed a weird sound when it shifted in overdrive [D]
then later i was going around an BOOM lost [D]. was just like neutral.
now i ust use D and once i hit 100kmph i shift into [D]. 4th wont catch unless im going over 90kmph
i just drive it like that. its not a big deal to me, but yours seems like more of a problem.
