trans swap

I have a 83 Z28 with a 700r4 trans.and i am going to take it out and replace it with a 350 th that i am currentley rebuilding. Can someone on here tell me which tailshaft to use on the 350 so that i wont have to change driveshaft length(short, intermediate or long tailshaft?)? also any other tips like crossmember info would be appreciated.

I am doing the same swap, the guy I am getting mine from said it has a standard tailshaft which will fit in a 3rd gen wout changing the driveshaft. He also said i will need a different crossmember.

Im not sure down to the measurements, but I know that a th350 is shorter than a 700r4. Considering that you would have to replace the output shaft of the trans and get a longer housing for the case, I would guess that It would be easier and cheaper to get a longer driveshaft.

im going to do the same swap. the drive shafts from a 82 camaro and firebird are the right length for the th350 trans unless it has the long tail shaft which is 6 inches i think. 83 and newer used a shorter driveshaft with 700r4's and 82 used a 2004r trans which was the same length as the standard th350.

it would be easier for me to drop a long shaft into my 350th since it is already apart and the tailshaft is much cheaper than a driveline. Anybody out there ever tried a 700 tailshaft housing on a longshaft 350??

The long tailshaft TH350 (9") uses the same driveshaft as the 700R4. If you have an 82-83 with the metric 200 tranny (3 speed), you can use the short tailshaft TH350 (6").

There are a few other things needed for the swap. The best thing to do is to buy a swap kit. jegs and Summit carry them. The kit deals with the mount location and torque arm bracket. The TH350 mounting pad is 2" forward from the 700R4. The kit supplies an adaptor bracket to use. The kit also supplys a bracket to attach the torque arm to the back of the tranny.

The best thing to do is buy an aftermarket torque arm like the one from www.spohn.net for the tranny you want to install.

You're also going to need a manifold vacuum line running down to the modulator valve. The TH350 detent cable isn't the same as the 700R4's TV cable. The bracket is also different. I believe the kits also deal with this.
