I can guarantee a built 700r will be cheaper than a T56.
converting an auto to a standard will be a lot of work and costly, the T56 itself is probably worth the same as your modded 700
a beefed up 700 with a aftermarket converter will outperform a T56.

I'm doing the same atm, 700r without a doubt.

A beefed up auto will get better 60' times, and more consistent launches....but with significantly lower drivetrain losses the 6-speed will whip it on the freeway every time. Not to mention the unmatched efficiency of the .5:1 overdrive. And the simplicity (no kickdown cable to adjust, no tranny cooler to leak, no havin to drop the pan and change the filter) is always good for reliability.

So basically if you're gonna drag race it go wtih the 700-R4....but for a street car the T-56 is a better call (IMHO) and MUCH more fun. If you can afford it.

with a lockup converter, drivetrain losses between the 700 and a manual is actually pretty close.
the highway race will almost always go to the manual car though

I at times wish my car was a stick but it's not good for my combo, I'd slow down big time...

Yeah turbo cars generaly run better with auto trannys, cuz you dont get the boost loss when shifting.

Blowers generally run better with manual cars from what I hear, but I don't know why.

Why not T350? just curios????? I had a 700R4 and it just wouldn't take any horsepower. I had roughly $900 dollars invested in it and it just wouldn't stay together My next step was a T350....yes i sacrificied a little gas-mileage , but in the long run it was the right thing to do! With the T350 and the gear ratio that I'am running.......It's a wheel pulling some bitch now !!!!

I agree

those od's are cool and all but its better to stick with know good technology. I put a B&M coversion kit in mine and went TH350 too.
Within 2 days i'll find out how well its gonna do for me too. Also stall convertors are cheaper and th350's are easy to get.

Besides the fact that i already had the 700 and that I don't want to mess with the swap. I would like to retain the overdrive. I enjoy having deep gears and still being able to cruise at 60-70 easily.

th200

th200 was stock in 82 83 cars and looks simular to a th350 but is a real crappy tranny

how do you add stuff to your profile? like

1986 Trans Am 383 stroker with 882 heads. 700r4 with B&M 2400 stall and B&M Shift kit. and 3.73 rear with alburn posi.

Don't let the local tranny shops build you a 700r4, the horror stories are endless. People are truly clueless on how to make them last behind any kind of abuse. Even the shops that tell you 'yeah, it will hold up'. Don't believe them.

Get a pro-built, car-pro, art-carr, or other known built tranny.

I've got a pro-built now, and it's not worth dealing with the local shops who don't have a clue.

The t-56 swap is more of a project, and will cost about $500 more than a pro-built 700 depending on if you can get everything for the swap for $1500.

T56, without question.

The T56 will hold more power than a 700, and is an all around better transmission to have, IMO.

Spending money to have a 700 built to handle power, would just as easily buy you a T56 which would already handle the same level of power...and then you've got a manual to enjoy.

Nothing beats having a 6spd.

I had my tranny rebuilt by a local guy that came recommended for like $650. Well, this POS didn't even last a full year before it started screwing up. I'm still limping around with it now, and it hasn't quit working enough to be undriveable, but I can't race anymore (which takes all the fun outta the damn car). Truth is, almost all the local guys really do not know all the many, many tricks required to get these bastards to handle real power. And I'm not even really making that much power, maybe 350hp/400 ft-lbs give or take...

You need one from Pro-Built or maybe one of the other online performance places. I'm thinking of trying the Raptor 700r4 from http://www.transmissioncenter.net/highperflist.htm (crappy webpage...) $1500 with converter, TV cable, etc. But I don't know, the Pro-built www.pro-built.net is only a little bit more ($1400 for just the tranny, $300ish+ at least for a decent converter...) and it is supposed to be absolutely bullet proof and is known to be sweet with alot of people running it online to recommend. Not sure about this Raptor, but I'm cheap and will probably end up giving it a shot...
