Lightbulb Tranny gurus inside

I've got a real quick question. My buddy's '84 Camaro is having a bit of a tranny problem. The car is a 305/700R4. His tranny is having problems only on the 2-3 shift. It seems to take a while to shift into 3rd from second under hard acceleration. It does eventually shift, but there's an abnormally long delay between gears. The tranny kicks down to 2nd from 3rd fine, and the 1-2 and 3-4 shifts are good, too. I'm thinking maybe the 2-3 servo is shot?

Give me some opinions and maybe some possible fixes.

Thanks!

There could be several problems, your right the 2-3 shift valve could be going to hell on you, or you could be a little low on Governor pressure. You also may have to adjust your shift points using your throttle valve cable. Do this, under light throttle aplication see where your shift points are. The should be right around 7-10mph for the 1-2 shift, and 15-18mph for the 2-3 shift, if this is not the case, adjust the TV cable by unclipping it and making it longer or shorter to adjust the timing of the shift. Just remeber, the TV valve uses pressure to hold the shift valve closed to delay the shift a little bit, its better to have the tranny shift a little harder, than it is to have it shift sooner and softer so if you are going to have it go one way, make sure the shift is delayed rather than too early, as you can burn up your clutches and then its overhaul time.

Good luck man,
Erik

1984's had boost valves that were on the small side and the 3rd gear accumulator (which is the 2nd gear servo) took to much of the 3rd gear oil at WOT. The cheapest way to solve this is to put in the Corvette servo and the larger boost (.471/.296) valves ($45.86). Personally, I would install the HD Trans-Go Shift along with the boost valves & Corvette servo ($73.85), this will solve the shifting, shift timing, and TV cable adjustment problems inherent in the early 700R4's. Let me know if I can be of help?
