Was tpi an option in 91-92 rs camaros?

I have seen a few 305 rs camaros and formula firebirds but they all have a 305 throttle body injection. I was wondering if TPI was an option on these cars? How much better is TPI than TBI?

You could only get tpi on a b4c camaro rs (police car). The formula is just a t/a in firebird trim. So it was an option. Firebirds didnt come with them stock. TPI 305 cars were rated at 190hp 290tq and the 305 tbi cars were 170hp and 250tq.

nope........tpi was much better stock for stock. if your going to mod them i wouldn't necessarily be scared of the tbi.

you've heard this from many people though; if your going to bother to buy a v8 rs why not just get a 305 91-92 z.

are you in that much of a hurry. last two years alone there have been well over 20+ in the area for under 4,000. unfortunately times are changing now and the z28's and irocs aren't getting much lower and most are increasing!

not that that's good for you though. personally i wouldn't waste the time unless your getting a good deal on the rs, i'd just wait. but if you have to have something then i can understand it i guess.

Its hard working on the 305 tbi because to get good power out of it everything has to be changed. GM really didnt want the RS to go fast, but I cant say that it isnt reliable. Mine was rock solid at 120k miles and 100+ passes down the track.

Thanks for all the help guys, I guess I will just wait for the right Z or trans am to come along. I prefer a Z28 or IROC, I just miss my 2002 Z28 that ran a 12.5 but had to go because of law school. Hopefully I can build a third gen to that level.

Depends on what year... The HP and TQ ratings for 91-92 305 TPI's are 205 HP and 285 TQ for the single cat version, and 230 HP and 300 TQ for the dual cat 5-speed version. TBI was always 170 HP and 250 TQ however.

anything can go fast obviously........

jp2002ls1, just keep your eyes out. i put less than 2,000 into my drivetrain mods and can run faster than ls1's with a k@n all day.

it's all about the money. obviously a ls1 car is faster out of the box, but take half the amount of that car and you can build a faster, better car easily.......at least until 3rdgens become expensive "if" it ever happens. good luck on the search!

You do really need to tear into the 305 tbi to get moving fast. Heads, cam, intake, exhaust, posi, gears... high 14s can be acheived with stock heads and cam, which isnt bad, but its not 12.5.

I wish I could have got all my bugs ironed out this year and got some traction, but with the season just about over it doesnt look like I'll pull the times outa my car that I want yet.

Interresting tidbit of information: TPI was an available option on the regular production RS (i.e. not including B4C models) in either 91 or 92. None were ordered.

Does anyone here know anything about cross-fire injected 305's? I saw a 1982 t/a for the first time with crossfire fuel injection. Did they make camaros crossfire injected? Does anyone know if it would be possible to put two 4bbl carbs inplace of the two throttle bodies on cross-fire injection? Hmmmm just thinking of one crazy setup!
