TPI to Carb
TPI to Carb
My friend wanted me to post this for him...He has a 350 TPI, and he wants to convert over to a carb...he wants to know ecactly what he needs....What other things do you need besides a carb, intake, and fuel pump? i know there has to be more, he just wants to know all of the parts before he gets into the middle of this project...and how much can you sell a complete TPI system for, intake, computer, fuel rails, injectors, everything? I heard like 600, if its that much, i might think about swappin to a carb too.....and i got a question too, say i wanted to convert my vette motor over to a performer rpm intake, and 670 hollley carb, would i gain horsepower or loose hp? I'm guessin i have around 275-300hp right now...How much hp would i be lookin at if i went to the intake, carb, and a new mild cam?
Why would he want to go to a carb? You're gonna hear a lot of this. Carbs are old school, they're not as tunable as a TPI, computer controlled stuff is way better (unless he fried the computer and wiring harness...Then I can see the reason for the switch.) plus why would you want to hack up a perfectly good TPI car? Sell it to someone who wants it and go get an old Carbed car. yada yada yada... Ohh, did I mention I highly recommend you have his head checked.
Ok, that ends the public service announcement.
For a carb you need a new fuel pump, carb, and intake manifold. Then you will need a new cam and what not to get back to the original specs of the TPI motor because you're gonna loose some power in one area and gain in another.
lol... I cant even reply to this topic. I hate when people hack up a TPI car and slap a carb on it...

well my car, and his car are both in great condition, no rust whats so ever, and everything mechanical on the cars are perfect, so why would we sell them?.....my computer is f-ed up, and so is his...we both have been having a lot of trouble with sensors, and all the other problems you have with fuel injection...can i get some more opinions on this from people that have done it, and that aren't so biased about it..thanx...
I did the opposite. I did it more for looks than power since TPI looks cool.
I did end up with more power with the TPI since I did a cam swap at the same time.
Going with the carb, you should be able to make more power and rev higher.
you will need a new distributor as well.
TPI setup,

Carb setup,

Carb setup,
im running a carbed LT4 in my 91 GTA (but i left he ECM and harness in the car for future needs =)/.....you DO NOT need a new fuel pump...get a 29 dollar 3 port holley FPR and be done with it...youll need a carb intake and a new distributor THATS IT..
i happen to strongly disagree about the carb being not a s tuneable or not as reliable WTFE maybe if the carb is old and needs work.,...here in michigan it gets VERY cold at night...and every morning id go out give er a couple pumps pull the choke half way and shed fire right up everytime...im sure i lost a little feul economy, but pulling a 96 LT4 6 speed car 2 cars by 100 kinda makes me forget about that....and like i said i will be going back to FI when i have the extra 1,500 bucks for all the parts...
CARB SETUP 600 bucks
FI setup 1,500-2000 bucks....this is starting from scratch

well if I do it, its gonna be because a carb looks a hell of a lot nicer than a FI motor, it cleans the engine bay up a lot more, and doesn't look as cluttered..i think this winter i'm gonna start workin on the body of my car, and rims, and kinda lean towards more of the car show perspective instead of the POWER point of view....so i'm not really looking for a huge gain in hp, i wanna be able to compete with the fast cars, but 12 second quarters aren't really my interest right now...i wanna get some 18's, hirise spoiler, new paint job, lowered, and see if I can win some car shows...so i just need a carb, carb intake, distributer, and fuel pressure regulator? I don't have to do anything with my throttle cable or anything do I, shorten it?
