torque converter

I'm about to pick up a torque converter out of a 87 corvette for extremely cheap. How much higher does that stall than the one they used for my 305? Is it worth the work?

Stock on your 700R4 is about 1600/1700 RPM stall and the Corvette one should be about the same. Not worth the effort in my opinion.

OK, so it has the same stall. But I'm throwing in a beefed up L98, would the vette converter handle more power than my stock one?

Nothing to write home to Mom about if anything at all.

Probably the same one. Why bother. When it goes, it goes. When it is rebuild time get a different one. Don't bother with one that came out of another car. In a pinch, maybe. Don't believe that if you have a beefed up L98, the tranny will handle that much power. Babying mine after I got back from LPE, it lasted 6 months and it was a fresh GM rebuild.

A another Myth: Corvette parts are not always better then stock
3rd Gen parts for the same model years. Just a name in most cases.

I think the only diff is 100-200 rpm, i put one in a 88 IROC, that is all it seemed like, if you get a convertor, get a good aftermarket one, the only time i would get one is if i had a trans for a totally stock car rebuilt(i.e., the 88), then it is the same price as the stock replacement

I got an 87 GTA with a corvette converter and it stalls at about 2000 with some good tires. Just thought I would throw that in there to help.

O yeah, I forgot to mention that my motor will already be out of my car. And also, I'm actually getting the converter for free. So even if it gives me another 200 rpms, I'm thinking I might just throw it in.

It won't. Question is, are you sure the new TC has no contaminants in it? If not it might hurt your tranny. In any case, why do it? No gain and some risk?

Now would be a good time to install a New Torque Converter (about a 2400 stall) and for forget about the so called Corvette free one. Cheaper and easier now, SLP has a 2400 stall one at a good price.

Provided the tranny is in good shape. Drop the pan first and see what lies at the bottom
