Ticking Noise...Please Help.

I get a ticking noise for my 86 Camaro. It only ticks during acceleration in drive. It doesn't do it in park...So it's not the lifters. Anyone else have this problem or know what it is? Thanks!

Could it be an exhaust leak?

Just because its new exhaust doesn't means its not leaking! start check the u joints, brakes, wheel bearings, motor mounts and trans mounts ect anything that moves when the car moves. One time i had a small bolt jammed in one of my tires deep enough to stay in but not enough to cause a flat, it drove me nuts trying to find the clicking it made when it hit the pavement.

Well, I am going to suggest lifters for the simple fact of no one has yet. My lifters ticked when I'd put it in gear, but not while I was in park... I didn't have to be moving tho, only as long as the car was in gear. (Lower rpms, could hear better.)

Before you go spend alot of money, go buy some Injector cleaner. When your injectors get dirty they can make a little tick-like noise. Just try it, what've you got to lose?

If it's a TPI that is......I dont know jack about TBI

I don't think this would happen only if it were in gear, but an exhaust leak DOES sound like a valve train tick, only when you open the hood can usualy tell though.

I changed my header gaskets (ahh! that was a long day!) and my engine is very quiet now!

Oh, and you say your exhaust is new? did you get headers? If so, I'd check to see if all the bolts are tight. For aluminum header gaskets, when you tighten one bolt, you have to go retighen the bolt on the other side of the tube, then go back to the first on again. Keep doing this till they both are tight.

Any way, I dont' think this is you problem because yours only happens in gear, but it's something to check out if all else failes.

Good luck bro!

My engine made this rattling/ticking noise at high rpms at wot. {you know, while blasting down the track } Anyways. I could never figure it out. I pulled a few degrees of timing out of the engine and vwala, no more noise.

FOR ANYONE WITH THIS PROBLEM. If the noise is coming from the engine the problem is almost certainly the head gasket. I just fixed the exact same problem and all it took was a 30 dollar head gasket and the problem dissapeared. Hope this is helpful.

What, in the head gasket, would cause the ticking noise anyway?

I would try using a long screwdriver or a stethoscope to listen to the engine for ticking.
