What year 3rd gen Trans Ams did the speedo only go up to 80 or 85 MPH....?

I know it was between '85-'90, need to know quick!

 

they had the 85mph in 82-90. My 84 bird had it.

 

Do you mean Trans Ams or Trans Am GTAs?

In 86 the 140mph speedo became avavilbe. I think all GTAs got this? wait....I think 87 was the last year for the 85mph speedo.

Went to 120mph then--with the 140 optional.

 

Just checked my Firebird Redbook. 87 was the last year of the 85mph speedo. As I mentioned the new reading for the base speedo was 120mph in 88-92

 

OK now, what year was the wrap around wing introduced on Trans Ams ( Non-GTA) or was it available since '82?

 

I'll have to check out some other books but its 86-or 87. Very heavy piece

 

The reason i'm asking all this is, I see a Trans am for sale around my neighborhood. It a 5.0 FI Trans Am. Only the owner is currently away. It has the wrap around wing made of rubber and an 85 MPH speedo. I'd really like to know what year it is..

 

Look for 3rd brake light. In 86 they were on the top of the hatch (outside)--in 87 they were inbetween the spoiler and the rear decklid.

And in 85---there was none.

Does it have the silver GFX?

could be an 87.

 

It has no ground effects. The wheels I remember vividly, You know the Firebird/Trans am wheels on the late 80's early 90's with the center caps? These were exactly like those, same spokes. Except, there was no center cap, the spokes joined in the middle. Cant remember about the brake light. I'd have to look at it again. It does have the "nostril" hood also..

 

No GFX??? T/As and GTA had them. I have never seen anyone take them off.
Of course all GTA GFX were body coloured, so maybe you did not notice them?

the 16" wheels you mention sound like GTA rims. They have a big black centre cap. Usually called Cross-lace rims.

GTA had the same hood as 85-92 Trans Ams.

Perhap, I did not notice the GFX. Not the cross lace rims, the other ones. Like the ones on this car, but these had no center caps. Just joined in the middle

 

It had THESE wheels, I believe their 15's

 

No gfx, but a wrap around spoiler and 87 Formula wheels--- sure it isnt an 87 Formula, repainted?

Or a base model Firebird with the 305 and a wraparound wing hatch...

 

My 85 came with the 140 speedo and the wrap around spoiler.

 

Must be a Trans Am, it has the decals and even the honeycomb taillights.
