Re: Swapping 350 TPI over to a carb

you'll need a new distributor, new intake and any carb you want....you'll also have to redo your fuel system or put a really low fuel pressure regulator on it or something to lower the fuel pressure...also you'll have to figure out a way to make your torque converter lock up switch to work, its worth about 1-2 mpg's, run it to a switch or something....as far as a carb, you can get whatever you want, the intake has to be matched correctly to the heads, you can run stock heads because they make 2 different angles of intakes...

Yeah, you can get a carbed intake to fit your "newer" heads, but since you have to buy an intake anyway, why not go vortec? Pick up a set of vortec heads and a vortec intake (say like a Performer RPM Air Gap) and swap in something like a Comp Cams XE 276HR if your feeling froggy. If I were you, that's what I would do.

If you do want to keep the stock heads, find a carbed intake with a 87+ bolt pattern. Any carb between 650-750cfm will work fine. Go with a 750cfm carb if you plan on swapping in a cam or doing cam and heads.

why are you switching to carb? fuel injection will always give better gas mileage and its just as easy to make horsepower. if you want a better intake system, go with a HSR or the Edelbrock base/runners or SLP runners.

Re: Swapping 350 TPI over to a carb

when i was new to this game, all i thought was CARB...then i started to learn all kinds of new stuff about fuel injection and how much better it can be when tuned right...now i'm sittin here with a 276HR cam, HSR intake, redone alum L98 heads, and I'll be pushin around 400 HP and about 20 MPG on the hiway...and if your not good or odn't know how to tune your computer, you can be like me and just have somebody burn you a chip, it costs no more than 150 bucks to have a custom chip burnt...IMO carb is the easy way out, but not the best way...

If you do decide to convert to a carburetor an Aeromotive 13301 regulator will allow you to keep your existing in tank pump.

Best way to convert is to sell your car to someone who appreciates EFI and has the skills and patience to make it work. Then take the money and go buy yourself a dinosaur with a carb on it and have fun.

Keep in mind its a federal violation to remove the smog/emissions equipment from any car that is registered and travels on public roads, even if your state doesnt do smog checks.

I use a 13301 Aeromotive regulator now and used a 4 port mallory in the past. Wire the Fuel pump to stay on with the Ignition key. I have a head/intake package and possibly even a Demon carb and HEI Ditributor to match them perfectly if you're interested. PM me.

speaking of emissions: what will happen if you switch to carb from a already fuel injected car. I am looking at an 88 IROC that has a swapped 350 carb engine. Will i be alright for emissions. ANy experience in this.

LS1MARO, no you will not be alright for emissions...a car that came stock with FI must have FI to pass emissions...if they just do a sniffer test you might pass it, you won't pass the visual tho...i'm not real sure how that all works..
