Supercharging 91 Z28?
Supercharging 91 Z28?
i am looking into supercharging my 91 z28 tpi. is it anygood? would it give me alot of ponies or is it just a dud? does it work well with the tpi setup? please let me know because i don't want to drop 3 grand on somethin that wont give me substancial power and torque increases. thanks
Re: Supercharging 91 Z28?
TPI setups take very well to boost, just don't overdo it. You don't want to spend 3 grand on a supercharger and then have to shell out for a new engine. At most the engine will safely handle about 8 lbs of boost. But even then be on the lookout for detonation. That will ruin your little project very quickly.
But from what I have seen 8 lbs will give you roughly about another 100 ft-lbs and another 200 horses.

Re: Supercharging 91 Z28?
I wouldn't run 8psi on a TPI
iron heads for 1 too much effective compression ration,
I run 8psi on a 95 LT1 camaro and it killed the stock bottom end, car only had 80,000km and ran boost about 10,000km
5 psi would be more reasonable

Re: Supercharging 91 Z28?
That's because the Powdered Metal Rods in a Stock LT-1 aren't really all that great. The first 2 years of the LT-1 had Forged Rods and then GM went to the Powdered Metal Rods for 95 because they were cheaper to make. I had one in my N/A stock motor snap in 2 places while cruise'n at 75mph on the highway. Also my motor had just turned over to 58k miles. There was a slight lean issue in that cylinder.
So, his rods should be up to the job and hold out just fine.

L98's have less compression than an LT1. And you can do it but you have to be careful of detonation b/c of the increased heat from the iron heads. Most people run 6 lbs.
