Supercharger Problem
Supercharger Problem
I AM HAVING A PROBLEM WITH MY SUPERCHARGER THROWING THE BELT. IT SEEMS THAT THE PULLEY IS LOOSENING UP CAUSING THE BELT TO GET CHEWED UP. I TIGHENED IT UP ONCE TO APPROX 75 FT#'S AND LOCKTITE. NOT SURE IF IT WAS TIGHT ENOUGH. CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT THE TORQUE SPEC FOR THE PULLEY ON A PROCHARGER P600B W/ 14# PULLEY??? CAR IS 91 W/305, 1.6 ROLLER ROCKERS, HEADERS AND MAKES A SOLID 10# BOOST. THANKS
First, make sure the pulleys are aligned correctly and that one edge of the belt is not getting worn out. If it is wearing the edge off, you have an alignment problem. Otherwise you can crank down on the tensioner pretty hard. I believe they have markings on the tensioner that move as you tighten it. refer to the instruction manual as to the optimum adjustment.
I have a P-1SC on my Mustang and it is tightened all the way down. Make sure you can't twist the belt more than 45 degrees. The long belts that these superchargers use are also more susceptible to stretching, so if you've had the belt on there a while, you may need to change it also.

What kind of balancer to do have?
Here's what happened to me. I was riding along on the freeway one day and unknown to me at that time, my 12-rib blower belt starting walking off the pulleys/idlers. The first indication I got of this was a loud slapping noise. By the time I was able to pull off the interstate, the belt had shredded into short sections of string!! When I got home, I inspected everything and could find nothing wrong. Weird, I thought. I installed another belt and everything appeared okay. A couple days later, I noticed a very slight vibration in a narrow rpm range. hmmmm..... Looked for all the obvious causes and could not find anything wrong. This vibration progressively became worse until one day, it got so bad that I could not drive over 10 mph. Good, I thought. Whatever was breaking is now broken, so I will know what's going on! My balancer, a Fluidampr, cracked along the hub and it was virtually being held in place by the belt!! I assume this crack happened over time and the first indicator was the blower belt flying off. Unfortunately, it completely chewed up the crank snout, which required replacement. I have since completely rebuilt my 305 and I now use an ATI Superdamper with a custom-made inner hub (far stronger than even the ATI piece! Check your balancer!!!
