Suggestions: Upgrading L98 Engine

I want to upgrade my L98 engine. Here is what I want to do:

1. Re-manufacture my existing Stock L98 5.7L V8 350 TPI engine (245hp)
2. Upgrade cam to one that obviously Lopes however MUST be comparible with the specs of the car (below)
3. MUST not have a problem with passing Air Care (I've been told too large a cam will cause the engine to fail the HydroCarbon test on aircare or something).
4. Want to change piston heads
5. Same gas (I use 92 octane)
6. Adds more HP

[SPECS]

Engine: Stock L98 5.7L V8 350 TPI engine with K&N's
Tranny: Rebuilt 700R4 4-spd Auto tranny with overdrive. Heavy-duty Kevlar bands, new clutches, shift kit, new friction plates, new bushings)
Rear : Stock 3:23 gears (WANT to stay the same as I also drive on HWY).

MUST PASS AIR CAR

I only drive around 4,500km a year. Please, I would suggest your opinions and recommendations on mod's and experiences on the topic.. My LIMIT is $4,500CDN Final Total including tax, labor and parts.

How much HP would I expect possibly with the mod's? Thanks

If you're keeping the stock heads, I'd go LPE 216 cam. Keep the 1.5 rockers with that setup and it will fit. Throw a Vigilante 2600 and cooler in with your setup and you'll have one heck of a fun street car.

AFR 180 eliminator heads would be a real kick in the tail. Throw in 1.6 roller rockers with it and away you go. This eats up about half your budget just in parts alone.

What kind of intake setup are you going to be running? Stock tubes? SuperRam? Large Tube Runners? SLP? Might as well throw in a new intake manifold while you're in there.

Depending on which heads (stock or aftermarket) you're going to use. For stock, the Summit 1.6 roller rockers are both cheap and they fit (narrow body, good for center bolt heads). Could use them on aftermarket heads too unless you want to spend the big bucks for ProMagnums.

What kind of exhaust setup are you/do you want to have?

I would probably look into the Vortec heads and Scoggin Dickey Vortec baseplate. The heads are relatively cheap, and the baseplate is around $450 I believe. Im not quite sure if it is emissions friendly but you can go to Scoggin Dickey's website and Im sure it will tell you. Throw some headers on it with a mild cam, and you should be pushing at least 325hp.

Vortec heads dont have EGR passages, so you would have to use the Corvette-style EGR system.
A camshaft that "lopes" will require a custom chip made for the computer, so be prepared for that if you go that route.
Trick Flow 23 degree heads are some of the best bang-for-the-buck heads out there. Pair that with a ZZ4 camshaft and I made 280 HP at the rear wheels on a stock tune.

Car specs:

L98 5.7L V8 350 TPI, STOCK CHIP, 1.5 factory rockers, new valve springs, 700r4 trans with shift kit, 3:23 gears, MUST PASS AIR CARE. I would like the BEST REAL "CAM" sound..

It's between 3 now:

LT4 Hot Cam:

Cam Style Hydraulic Roller
Operating Range 1,800-5,800 RPM
Advertised Duration Intake 279
Exhaust 287
Duration @ .050 Intake 218
Exhaust 228
Lift with 1.5 Rockers Intake .492 in
Exhaust .492 in
Lift with 1.6 Rockers Intake .525 in
Exhaust .525 in
LSA 112

300 Specs:

*Note: Hydraulic Roller for factory roller cam engine with stock Tuned Port Injection and stock computer.

Operating Range: 1000-5000 RPM
Duration Advertised: 262° Intake / 264° Exhaust
Duration @ .050'' Lift: 206° Intake / 210° Exhaust
Valve Lift w/1.7 Rockers: .450'' Intake / .480'' Exhaust
Lobe Separation Angle: 112°

302 Specs:

*Note: Hydraulic Roller for factory roller cam 305 & 350 engines with TPI and modified computer.

Operating Range: 1200-5200 RPM
Duration Advertised: 264° Intake / 274° Exhaust
Duration @ .050'' Lift: 210° Intake / 220° Exhaust
Valve Lift w/1.7 Rockers: .480'' Intake / .480'' Exhaust
Lobe Separation Angle: 112°

Note they put "Modified Computer"... That part worries me..

Which one of these will have the most lope to it? More "CAM" sounding?

I have the complete crate Scoggin Dickey TPI engine. It will pass emissions and it has the baseplate. I also have the mods in my sig and still passed emission. I'm pushing around 390 to 400hp at crank.

Goodluck on your mods "camarosource".

Not sure who told you or how you got that, but I HIGHLY doubt thats a 400HP motor just b/c of the TPI intake. I bet the torque is near 400,but HP should be around 330-370 tops.

This is getting off track maybe but here is my motor. My engine shop is a good freind so we did a few minor things I cant disclose. The motor is under warranty still.
http://www.sdparts.com/product/SD360...ripEngine.aspx

This motor is advertised with 357HP W/headers, 52mm TB and runners. I just tweaked another 33 to 43hp or so.
