Hey Gang,
Im about to do some preventive maintance on my 91 camaro with a 305 tbi.It has a 120K and i want to change the timing chaing before I damage anything else if the chain decides to go.Are there any reconmendations on which one to buy?A timing set from autozone or napa or kragen cost 40-50 bux.Should i just opt for the edelbrock timing set or should i get a gear whine one from pete jackson or somewhere else.All and any info will be greatly appreciated

 

Well, the '91 has a roller cam, this means early model sets or gears won't work. I'm not aware of a "noisy" set that will fit but, Edlerbrock sells a gear-to-gear set for about $160, but Dynagear sells a Double Roller set for about $50. Not much of an advantage below 7000rpm, so I'd go "Double Roller"...

That looks saweet.How hard was it to install also is there any hp/torque gains from putting in an aftermarket chain compared to a over the counter napa/autozone brand?

My friends have this chain and they say that they have much better throttle response.

Install is just like a normal timing set.

They should be good. I just don't know anyone running one.

 

cloyes it is.....Is there any other small stuff i should buy while im at it?I already changed the water pump....

 

Do you have the means to remove the engine?
Can you have the car down for a few days?
Do you have a little more money available?

If so, I'd pull the motor and freshen it up with new bearings piston rings, change all the seals and gaskets, possibly the oil pump. Should get you another 120K+ miles out of the motor.

 

hmmmm that should set me back another 3-400 bux and down 3-4 days.Ill take that into consideration.Thanks once again
