Stupid noise

91 RS 305tbi, automatic, 2.73 non-posi

Ok, I think everything went wrong with my car at once.
Just running you can hear a ticking/clicking noise that comes and goes randomly getting better or worse, turning on the vents, AC, or just about anything that draws power will make it get louder/quieter. Putting it into gear will also affect it.
Its really hard to tell where its comming from, it sounds almost like the middle of the motor but listenng with a stethescope (still don't know how I aquired that thing) it doesn't sound like its comming from anywhere on the motor or accessories, could it be somthing with the tranny?
Doesn't sound like any lifter noise I have ever heard and doesn't change at a constant rate with the RPM's so that has to be out right? An exhaust leak wouldn't be affected by the things its affected by. Whats left

Now the next thing which started more recently is when I put it into gear somtimes I get a weird noise for a few seconts before it goes in. Also when i'm driving slow I get a noise (differant from the first) that sounds like its comming from the rear. Did my damn motor, tranny, and rear all take a dump at the same time?

Hmm, most like a combination of if you put a bolt in a coffe can then started turning the can like a rolling/tapping sound. (thats the newer noise anyway).
The one i've always had is just a tapping noise.

The coffee can sound could be the cataletic converter on its way out, that could even be your first noise also, heat does strang stuff to metal. Have someone rev the engine while you watch the conveter and see if it swells up (more that just a little),if it swells a lot your cat is bad.

I know the converter noise and this isn't it. I guess this sounds a little more solid.
The cat has also been replaced with no effect on the noise.

I don't know, don't I need a laptop and some cable to find out? Unless I use my desktop and an extension cord

I just figured out exactly what it sounds like, anyone had the plastic black dominos? When you knock those together thats what it sounds like, probably 6-10/sec.
