from what ive read F body 10bolts fall apart at 400HP.
what rear does a vette use? it must be a different / better one since the z06 is putting out 405 horses.....are Y/F body rears compatible?

The rear end is totally different in a vette, first off the torque arm isn't mounted by a bushing, the torque arm doesn't move, the driveshaft doesn't move up and down like a camaro 10 bolt. the vettes rear suspension is made a lot stronger and they have bigger gears. The rear end in my 1985 vette with independent rear suspension has 8.5 inch rear gears in a Dana 36 rear end, f-bodies have a 10 bolt with 7 5/8" gears. In the 2002 camaro I had the torque arm bushing would flex and put more pressure on the driveshaft/rear end because it flexed. The downsides are that vettes don't have much suspension travel, 6 u-joints, and when a rear end brakes your looking at a $1500 repair (the price of a new 9-inch rear end for an f-body).
it has to do with alot of factors, the c5 (and c4 for that matter) vettes are completely diffrent from f-bodys, they aren't even in the same ballpark. if you are thinking of trying to swap a corvette IRS into your car, you will have better luck with a c4 version, but it will still be ALOT of custom work, and probably not worth the money.
now if you are looking for a stronger rear-end, you should consider a aftermarket 12bolt, or 9" kit, they make them ready with all the brackets and everything already in place. and both of those options are basicly bullet proof.

It has nothing to do with the T-56. It has to do with the fact that C4 and C5 'Vette's don't even HAVE a conventional rearend. They have a differential, but it is totally unlike the F-body rear. It's much larger for one thing, and instead of axle tubes it has U-joint yokes on either side. It's also mounted directly to the rear subframe, instead of moving with the rear suspension. It's a totally different design, and you can't even make a valid comparison between it and an F-body rear.
Also with the C5 you can't even say the tranny is next to the diff....the diff is actually built into the tranny tailshaft housing.

Well, in addition to being an IRS that's mounted differently, the fact is, 95% of the reason is that the Vette just uses a substantially stronger differential. My 91 uses a Dana 44 differential.
I don't know what sort of differential setup the C5 uses, because it's all part of the transaxle assembly with the T56. Whether Borg Warner makes the whole setup, or just the transmission portion, I don't know.
