Squeeky breaks?

Well, it's not like you think, it's the opposite of squeeky breaks, it only squeeks when I'm moving and NOT on the breaks, as soon as I put the breaks on (even just a little preasure) the squeek goes away. I have disks all around, and sounds like its coming from the passenger side, can't tell front or rear tho.

Any Idea what part of my breaks (if any) this is? Any way to fix it?

It's not a very loud squeek, I can't hear it under throttle (doesnt say much tho, can't hear much but the exhaust), but the pitch doesn't seem to change with speed, just a constant slight squeek at any speed, as long as I'm moving and not on the breaks.

Thanks for any info/help!

is it when you are tring to slow down or braking???

It might be your brake pads.

Did you pull the wheels and inspect the brakes? You should have at least done that before asking. Anyway, most pads have wear sensors on them. When the are worn to roughly 1-2mm before the backing plate (or rivets on our pads) they are designed to squeak without brake application and go away with the brakes applied. Or it could be dirt on the linings... Or... Check first.

It could be the break dust itself, happens alot to any car and all you need to do is take the wheels off and spay the **** out of em with some break cleaner. Then do the same with the breaks, they will be shinny and most likely stop the squeek.

Brake dust only causes noise on light brake application.

Well, I haven't inspected the breaks, because I don't know what to look for. about how often do break pads need to be replaced? I was told that in 96, my car got new breaks and pads (disk all around, I believe it came with drums in the rear, not sure).

Any way, thanks for the tips! I'll try to check the break pads, I assume the wheels will need to come off?

Thanks! and sorry for such easy questions, I really don't know much about my car.

With a larger open style wheel like the IROC wheel you could cheat and peek through the wheel and check the outboard pads, but I wouldn't advise it. Take the wheels off. Check the rotor. Any signs of blue/purple spots means they overheated, are probably warped, and are no longer safe to drive on. Large grooves in the rotor are bad too. Small grooves are sometimes normal (barely catch with your fingernail). Check the brake pad lining thickness. The lining is the part that touches the rotor, and the backing plate is what the lining is riveted to. Compare it to the thickness of the backing plate on the pad. If the lining is equal in size or smaller than the backing plate, you will need new pads. Or you could measure the lining. Because they are riveted, anything under 4mm means replacement. If they are NOT riveted, 2mm means replacement.

Brakes can last anywhere from 5,000 miles to 100,000 miles. Its a wear item, and varies greatly. Usually under "normal" conditions you can expect about 30,000 - 40,000 miles.

Most shops charge very little for a brake inspection...

You descriptoin of noise sounds exactly like the wear sensors, light squeeking(like someone scraping a thin piece of metal on the rotor b/c that's exactly what it is) and it will go away when ever the brakes are applied. Time for new pads.

Thanks you 2 for the info! I don't have a jack yet (or a spare!), but I can proabaly barrow one from someone, and now that I know what to look for, I think I can do it my self.

Thanks a ton! The squeeking is getting on my nerves! :P

squeeky brakes

If the wear indicators are not touching your rotor look at the dust sheild it may be touching your rotor and will only make a noise when the car is moving.

My bet is you will need new pads. Also check the rotors for trueness and if they are below wear specs. Rear brakes should also be checked.
