Spend all on car, or not?

Oh and borrow someone's 4-banger for a day to learn a little stick-work. It won't be fun with the torque of a TPI 350.

Hey,
Ive been browsen a while but this in the first post i felt like i should jump it.
I am always a big fan of getting what you really want. the 305 is a good engine and can be fast. I have a 91 5.7 and eventhough i would have loved a 5spd i find with the gearing the shift points make for a fast ride. Besides you can manual shift through the gears if you want. Ive always had a stick, but it is kinda nice having an auto for a change.
Also remember just because someone is asking $6000 dosent mean he/she will not take less.
I found mine ( wanted exactly what you want ) settled for the auto and got the price down to $3500 right seller and time. Here are pic from the day i got it
Never underestamate the power of 40 hundred dollar bills
you will be surprised how quick the notion of firm softens.

Ok. My first question to you. How deep into the mods do you want to go? What kinda timeslips are we lookin at here? If your aiming for 13's and that'll be good, a 305 TPI will do just fine, anything more, go w/ a 350. Now, whatever you do, make sure it's a TPI.
You can get these cars cheap, you just gotta look. I found mine last summer, it wasnt sitting in a guys driveway under a car cover, and I noticed the wheels, and I knew they were IROC wheels. Stopped, talk to the guy about it, and now it's sitting in my driveway. It's a 305 TPI and I ran 14.9 w/ exhaust, filters, and some minor weight reduction. It had 85,000 original miles on it and I got him down to $3500.

305's are capable, you just have to find the right buttons to push.

Well, i'm probably never gonna be at a track, since there are none around where i live, but i do want to be pretty fast, as in, i like to be able to at least not get totally worked by an ls1 z28
And why do you say make sure its a TPI, right now i'm looking at a 83 that is somewhat built and its a carbed 350 bored 30 over with a holley 650. I always hear that if the carb is tuned, then i will still be able to get decent gas mileage, and they are cheaper to repair, and buy stuff for.

LS1's run low 13's stock w/ a good driver. You can get a 305 into the low 13's. You can get you a 305 TPI in fair to good condition anywhere from $1850-$3500. w/ the money left you, should be able to acheive your goal.
w/ the TPI you can put an LT1 intake on it for $300 and have a really good gain.
www.lt1intake.com
This guy makes conversions on the LT1 intake, puts a distributor hole in it and gets it ready so the only thing you have to do is bolt it on. No new wiring harness is needed, nothing like that, just take the TPI off, and put the LT1 on. No prob.

i thought about going the 305 route and just modding it, but i just figured it would be a whole lot cheaper and faster to mod a 350.
and i'm really thinking of going with a carb too, cause i hear that the tpi sucks higher in the rpms.. so if i want to race from a roll or somethin, then tpi is gonna suck.
besides wouldn't a carbed 350 bored 30 over with heades, heads, n cam, be faster than a 305 with an lt1 intake, and run lower than 13s (provided it was tuned)?

Hmm..I was sayin that you should buy the LT1 intake, along w/ headers and such, but I really dont know which one would be faster. I dont know much about carbed stuff. Im putting the LT1 on my current 305 just until I get money to build the 355 LT1 I want. So, im just kinda buyin parts and putting it all on the 305 until I get ready for the 355. You wil certainly get better gas mileage w/ the LT1, and pass emissions.
