Speedometer acting whack

sometimes ill be cruising, and my speedometer will just drop from like 30 mph to 0 and the car will rev up by like maybe 100-200 rpms... it's not a lot, but it's noticeable. then, on it's own, the speedometer will come back to the normal reading. if i have my cruise control on and my speedometer drops, the CC disengages... what could be the problem thats causing my speedometer to drop all of the sudden and for no reason? thanks guys

I agree with Aklim, mine did the same thing and my car started missing and coughing and surging, but not all of the time. It's located on the tailshaft of the tranny and has an electric plug in it. After removing the bolt, it pulls straight out, but the "O" ring tends to get wedged over time making it difficult to pry out.

Its real simple, there's just one bolt holding it in, remove it then gently pry the VSS straight out. It might stick a little b/c the O-ring gets hard over time. I believe it was like $40 at AutoZone here.
