some questions on my header and driveshaft purchase.

so im getting a wierd vibration or maybe a rubbing, that i can actually feel with my feet thru the gas pedal it feels, i still have my stock ds, someone said a good chane it could be my ds and i need a new one anyway, so i plan on purchasing an aluminiun one. first off im not to high on horsepower maybe 250 at max and plan on 300 at the end. aluminium shafts are more know for snapping and taking my interior with it or just twisting. alse with headers on my car with my mods listed, how much should i expect from headers i purchased headmen coated shorties

Chances are you won't break a 3" aluminum shaft until you're well into the 11's. On average you will need at least 400-450rwhp, a significant driveline shock, and excellent traction to twist one.

With your existing mods, expect another 15-20HP with the headers.

With sufficient abuse, there are a few guys (one in my local club) who have broken 3" LS1 driveshafts with nearly stock LS1's, but they were running slicks and launching at something over 4,000+ rpm. Generally, Marc is right on, it is not likley that you'll break one, but if you try hard enough, you just might (if you try hard enough, you'll be suprised what you may manage to break). If you are in doubt, look up the 3.5" from Lingenfelter, I have one and it is a nice unit. It's a few more dollars, but I doubt that you'll manage to twist it.

Ever check your u-joints? they`ll make a high speed vibration that`ll make your car feel like a high end lazy boy. Oh yea don`t worry...that five couldn`t chuck a shaft with only one trunion left on the u joint

I think what he was trying to say is that it will take a very "stout" 305 to be in danger of breaking a driveshaft (meaning, launching at 4000+ rpm on sticky tires with a manual and assuming nothing else breaks first). With an auto car, you will need to make some serious HP to be in danger of breaking an LS1 shaft. I'm pretty sure he didn't mean any disrespect to your hard work. But I would agree that any 305 with stock heads (I'm guessing you still have the stock heads, I didn't see heads in your sig) and an automatic will have little chance of breaking that driveshaft (nothing is impossible). That is just basic physics (an auto won't generate the shock loads that a clutch dump will). And, that's good for you, because those driveshafts are out there and are reasonably priced. I say buy one!

My thoughts.

Maybe your DS is out of balance or the U joints are bad or both. I doubt you twisted it. I am using the AL one and haven't twisted it yet. To be safe I have a DS loop.

i'd check the joints...could just be out of balance too though as it happens. i wouldn't bother getting an ls1 or 1-le aluminum driveshaft unless you got a great deal. 75-125 or even less.

i twisted mine with only 300 rwhp and while i was running dr's they were 18's.

anyone looking for well made shafts at great prices email me and i'll refer you to someone here in michigan that is very reasonable. for a fraction more i upgraded to a much nicer chromoly shaft and i love it.

My buddy had a T5 in his Mustang that was throwing about 550 at the wheels and managed to twist the DS. He noticed vibration and when he tried to get it balanced, he saw it shake on the balancer and it was bad. He drops the clutch at 5500 and is blown. For all that, if all he got was a twisted DS, I doubt it would snap and take your interior with it unless you are making much more than 550 at the wheels and dropping the clutch at over 5000.

spend the dollars on a driveshaft loop....it's a good safety feature to have for such a case.

This worked pretty well for me and for $35, you can't beat that.
