Question Smog delete?

I want to take all that smog crap off my Z28. I saw on cardomain that a dude did it on his camaro. I know I need a smog pump delete pulley. I know that I can finally buy headers that dont cost a arm and a leg cause they wont have the A.I.R. crap on em. Im sure ill have some things that are going to need to be capped off. But what else do I need to worry bout? Will my ECM run like crap? Do have to get a new PROM? Anyone else done this project?

Thanks

I took off every last bit of smog equiptment on my car, and my car runs fine, you should have no problem. And you dont HAVE to get a delete pulley, just buy a belt that is shorter and run that instead. Check out this article to help you out a bit:

http://www.thirdgen.org/serpentine

The pictures show an engine that has had the power steering pump as well, so for now, just pay attention to the text in that article. Search the internet for the correct routing, I forget mine off the top of my head, but I believe it is over the AC, under tensioner, over Alternator, Over P/S, over water pump, back under the crank, and up to the AC.

Re: Smog delete?

I did the same thing to my 92- following the article that Goth posted a link to over on Thirdgen. It works just great. I would, however, recommend a belt that is slightly shorter than the 96.8" belt recommended in the article. Something in the 96.3-96.5" range would work better, if one is available in that length.

Re: Smog delete?

I did the same as the article on TGO.
The recommended belt size worked perfect.
Just a little pricy.
Guess they were proud of that size!

The only smog equipment the ECM cares about is the EGR. You can remove everything else without setting a code. Keep in mind however, removing emissions equipment on a street vehicle is a federal offense punishable by a fine, jailtime, or both.

Re: Smog delete?

Has anyone seen degraded performance from removing their smog gear?

I bought my Z back in January from PA and it had ALL of the emissions gear removed. Well, long story short, I had to do a lot of work to get it back on for VA emissions testing (since I live in the city). The car actually runs better with the emissions gear on. Not sure if it is because it is carbed versus you all doing it to TPIs. Or the fact that the headers and such were still all geared to having emissions gear.

My car went slower with the cat removed. Put it back on and everything is better.

Re: Smog delete?

I removed all mine and left the pump on after gutting it and no need to purchase a new belt.

Re: Smog delete?

My belt broke on my smog pump after my emission test last year. '87 and earlier TPI dont have a serpentine belt so you can just remove the belt. I didnt notice any change.

Re: Smog delete?

If any of you guys are willing to sell your smog pump and diverter valve, I'm looking for both. BUT it has to be off a v-belt system (1982 - 1987). On these years, both parts were connected with a hose and not a hard line like the 1988-92. Anyone interested?

My 91 has a rubber hose. Its only the 88 cars I have seen with the hard line for the AIR system.

Re: Smog delete?

I also removed the SMOG stuff off my '91 Z28 and I noticed improved performance. In particular I found that the idle RPM dropped a good deal lower and the car seemed to run better on cold starts. Once it warmed up though I can't say I noticed any significant power gain.

When I did it my car was stock and I had to plug up AIR holes in the manifold as wells as stuff some JB Weld in the CAT inlent tube.
