should i buy this car?

ive run accross an 86 z28 that supposedly runs good enough and very dependable except for the fact that he claims the carb isnt offering enough gas to the engine. he says it makes the car feel like its lacking power but other than that it runs good, so im assuming this is not a detramental fix. i'd like to get an idea of how much sending this to a mechanic to fix would cost..... he mentioned a cheap rebuild kit but im no mechanic and on low fund's. i really want this car and im hoping to hear low prices from you guys and i'd hate to settle for a honda. im really not in the position for a fixer upper to sit around my yard because this car would be my only vehicle

any opinion at all is greatly appreciated.

What was the asking price? In general, what kind of condition is the car in?
Lot's of factors to consider when determining what it may be worth but a carb'ed 86Z shouldnt be priced too high.

As for the lack of gas / power, could be something as simple and cheap as a restricted fuel filter or something costly like a plugged catalytic converter? Either way, if you cant diagnose it yourself it would be worth the money spent to get it addressed.

Good luck

Whats the eighth digit in the vin#?

If it is a "G" then its a four-barrel carb. L69 W/190hp (fast as a TPI) 5-speed only.

If it is "H" its a regular carb. LG4 W/155hp.

My opinion would be to stay away if it is the LG4 car. No performance and not worth the trouble. I'd look for a TPI equipped car if you are not in a hurry. Preferably an L98. As it will have the BW rear and 4 wheel disc for sure.

If it is the L69 engine buy it. Very few were made in '86. Only 74 to be exact.

Chances are if it was easy/cheap to fix he would have fixed it. Getting into a 22 year old car is never cheap or easy. There is likely a long list of things that need attention by now and if you're paying someone else to do them you'll quickly go broke. The old car hobby only makes financial sense if you can do the work yourself (or have the desire to).

Exactly, if you are looking for a dependable, daily driver, a 22 year old car that has already a known driveability issue probably isn't the best bet. You would probably be better off buying something reliable to get around town and save up for the "toy" car to play around with at your leisure.
