Which Shifter?
Which Shifter?
I'm debating on which shifter I should go with. I was planning on getting the B&M megashifter because it claims to fit perfectly in 82-92 fbody cars. But i don't know if i want that big stick sitting there in my center console...So then I looked around and found the B&M hammer shifter, this one looks a lot better, has a lot better styling, and it would look a lot cleaner sitting in the center console, however its a universal fit. Has anybody instlaled a hammer shifter or a universal shifter in their camaro? How much work is it? Should i just safe myself the time and aggervation and just go withthe megashifter?
This are the 2 shifters:

I`ve been tempted to get that one and try it also (hammer), I also like the Quick silver from B&M it looks more like the factory style

I also like the quater stick it is made for our consoles

This is the one That I`ve only good things about it`s about the same as the hammer $ wise

It fits the car perfectly. I had to cut a little because I was using it on a Firebird. It fits the camaro well. However, unfortunately for you, I have long ditched it and went back to the stock setup. The reason I had it before was that I wanted to be able to shift it at a higher RPM than it would do normally and banging it to shift it when I wanted was fine. I had my tranny rebuilt and they set it to shift when it reached 6000 RPM when at WOT so I removed it. Since then, I have not missed it. So you need to ask yourself "Why do you want one?"
well I want it because they look really sweet, and plus they have full ratchet action. I hear ratchet action really makes a difference, but i'm curious, what exactly does it do? Does it just make your automatic tranny into a manual except it has no clutch or what? And another reason I want the shifter is because i'm not getting my tranny rebuilt anytime soon, because i just bought the car, and the previous owner rebuilt it when he put the vette motor in, and that was about 20,000 miles ago, so I'm not gonna get it rebuilt so it shifts at 6,000 rpms at WOT. So out of the 2 shifters, which one would be better. How hard would it be to put the hammer shifter in, then fabricate the console around it? I'm wondering if i should just go with the megashifter just because its a direct fit.
I ended up doing a B&M Pro Stick. Took a few hours to install because I made a 2" spacer to put underneath it, then the hole drilling and bolting in, hooking up cable, wires for the Neutral safety switch, putting on the "optional 4 speed gate plate".
Looks awesome tho and with slight trimming I can still use the factory shifter plate.

Well, the difference I felt was that I could launch in 1 and keep it till I got the right RPM and then shift it to 2 and so on. I could do it with the stock shifter but I would accidently push it too far. The rachet action allows me to hit it as hard as I want and it advances 1 shift. Like I said, modified tranny removed the need for that thing.
