S10 axles fit?
S10 axles fit?
Will S-10 axles from an S-10 Extreme with Disk brakes work with my 86 Z28 with drum brakes? I got a 28 spline Eaton all ready for the center. I am really in the market for some 28 spline shafts that will work with Drum setup. I don't want to spend that much, just wanna get some cheap shafts. Thanks.
Into a fourth gen, maybe. Into a third gen NO. S-10 axles are longer than a third gens.
Check Ebay. There are 2 sets for sale. One says they're for and S-10 that you're not going to be able to use. The other set is an aftermarket set of 28 spline third gen axles.

The only factory 28 spline axles that will work are from a 1990-1992 third gen. I don't think there's a problem using drum brakes on axles that were originally using disk but I'm sure there's a problem trying to use disk on drum axles. It's just the size of the center flange. Everything else is the same.
That's why the aftermarket axles are good. They'll work with drum or disk.

82-92 f-body axles are 30-3/8" long
93-96 f-body axles are 32-1/8"
98 and up are 32"
97 is unknown. Probably a changeover year so it could be either length.
S-10 28 spline axles:
2WD
94-97 w/stick shift are 26-3/4"
98-99 w/auto and stick shift sport chassis are 26-3/4"
98-99 w/auto and stick shift are 26-11/16"
98-99 are 26-9/16"
4WD
88-97 are 29-1/8"
97-99 are 29"
There are also a bunch of 30 spline S-10 axles especially in the last couple of years in both 2WD and 4WD. I doubt these new diffs are the 7-5/8" 10 bolt but I've never checked.
So from the looks of it the 2WD axles are all too short and the 4WD axles are short by 1-1/4" for the third gen and definetly won't work in a fourth gen.
Astro Vans
90-02
Left side 34-15/16"
Right side 30-7/16"
Izusu Rodeo uses 7-5/8" GM diff.
90-96 with the 7-5/8" diff, 28-1/4" long
Since all these axles require c-clips to hold them in, there's no way to shorten a longer axle to get it to work and a shorter axle won't fit unless the diff housing was shortened by an equal amount. The distance between the c-clip and the bearing races will all be different so the only factory 28 spline axles that will work in a third gen diff are from a 90-92 third gen only.

Most trucks are offset like that to keep the pinion centered to the powertrain. A differential pinion isn't in the exact center of the diff. Ford 9" housings in just about any production car is the same way. Driver side axle is always longer so that the pinion is in the center of the frame.
