rust f#$@in' sucks

Ok my battery tray is really rusty and it's driving me insane...i tried sanding it, using rust dissolver etc etc...Can i cut the battery tray out and weld in new sheet metal? Bc it looks like the tray just sits in between the frame..like its its own plate, but then you look from the bottom and it looks like its all one soild piece (tray and frame)...help

You are correct that the battery tray is one piece. In fact its part of the inner fennder support. If its rusted that bad, repair it before you drop the battery on the front wheel.

Same problem here, hoping to cut it out and weld in a new piece of metal... Once i get a welder, learn how to weld, find the metal, and then get situated Not a very solid plan I know.

Have you checked Year 1 or NPD? They may have weld in replacement pieces.

I see third gen battery trays on eBay often - just cut out the old one and weld in the new.

my battery tray is rusted too, but it wasnt so bad, i was able to take a wirebrush and get it all off, (it looked hopeless, i didnt think the wire brush would work)

does anyone know why these battery trays tend to rust so easily??

and yea, rust sucks, i got 3 or 4 pinholes in my floor pan from rust (t-tops)

I would guess the location and it being flat and level is, water could drip down between the side of the hood and body and pool there.

No they mainly rust simply becuase there is a sulfur based battery sitting on it, and odds are, most of our cars at one time probably had a bad leaking battery or two, and no one cleaned off the acid with anit corrosion, or anything. My old z28's try was rusted and just hanging on for dear life, im lucky i noticed it and was able to weld it back up.

Use acid neutralizer, sold at auto parts stores on it first, then rinse it with waster to remove any left on the tray. Prep the tray with thinner or paint prep, and buy a substance called POR-15. It is awesome stuff! Paint it on the tray and never worry about it again, guaranteed.
