Run on

So far in two instances, both when coolant leaked out of a hose, my car has experienced run- on as in when i took the key out it didnt stop and i had to resort to poping it into first and stalling it out. Any advice on what this means or why it happend would be great. Thank you

Re: Run on

WOW! Thats the first time I have ever heard of that happening. Anyways it sounds like you have a problem in the igintion switch, or igintion module. Hope this helps

Re: Run on

If it stays running smooth, then its definately a problem in the ignition switch or some kind of wiring to the ignition. If it stays running for a few seconds but is rough, the problem is probably leaky injectors.

Re: Run on

is it even fuel injected?

usually with fuel injection when u turnoff the key it shuts off ignition as well as fuel injectors, but if u have a bad ignition module, or ignition switch then everything could still be running

when a car continues to run after being shut off, and it sputters the whole time is called dieseling, because u dont have spark but it still ignites on compression, just like a diesel engine, but it only happens on a few cylinders

its usually caused by excessive heat, or high compression/low octane gas,
thats about as much as i can help

Re: Run on

Carbed motor right? Do you remember what your idle RPM was when shutting off? Run-on/dieseling is most often caused by too much RPM. If you're RPM is higher than 800 in park/neutral, look for either a maladjusted carb, a choke problem, or a vacuum leak. If it still does it when the RPM is set to the underhood sticker, check ignition components and engine temperature. Most likely you'll find a choke problem, as is quite common with older neglected QJets.
