Rings on a 400
Rings on a 400
Ok i was going home the other day and started smokin real bad. Enough to make me rip my engine apart. I found the #1 & #2 cylinders where oily instead of carbonated like the rest and my #1 exhaust header tube and exhuast port on the head were oily. I this from a ring failure? The tops of the pistons look ok with visual inspection, so i dont think i have any cracked pistons.
Now with that said should i replace the rings or bore it out 010 more and get new pistons? im at 030 on a 400 SB.

Ring failure is a possibility, but you should look into valve guides and seals before you tear the bottom end apart. They're a LOT easier to fix, and just as likely to go out. (Maybe more likely, depending on which heads you're running.)
If it does come down to a ring job, mic the cylinders and see if you can get away with a quick hone and a set of rings. You're already .030 over, boring it any more will start to make the cylinder walls a bit thin. I personally avoid boring unless it's absolutely necessary.
