rear end problem?????????

well, i thought it was my transmission but when i had the car towed to have it put in i'm starting to think its not. i had the tow truck driver tow it to a friend's house to get it fixed. it rolled forward fine but when he went to back it up the rear wheels locked up and wouldn't turn? i couldn't figure out what caused it and am hoping somebody can tell me!

Sounds like you had chunks of something sitting in the tranny and when you went to roll it back they shifted and locked it up. Take the driveshaft down and I'll bet it will roll just fine.

if theres no driveshaft its GOT to be something in the rear end or the brakes. open up the rear and look for anything broken.

i dropped the car off at a buddy's house to replace my tranmission so he's gonna look at it for me. but i was thinking it may be the spider gears. i'm not too familiar with rearend but i know enough. can those be replaced without replacing the whole rear?

Spider gears can be replaced without ever taking the ring and pinion out if it's not a posi rear. I doubt that's the problem though...generally if the spiders go it will still roll, it just won't put power to the wheels. All you can really do at this point is open the diff up and see what there is to see. Hopefully it'll be fine and the problem will turn out to be something stupid like an e-brake cable that got snagged during the tow.....

9-bolt is much stronger.....10-bolt is much cheaper.....that's about what it comes down to.

well, i have a diagnosis. my buddy who looked at it said the rear driver side caliper had a bolt missing or broken or something like that. i went to an auto parts store and paid 25 frikkin bucks for one i go tomorrow to pick it up and do some minor touch ups(new vaccum hose, and the bolt).

Good deal....expensive bolt but it's a lot better than buying a new rear end. I'm glad it ended up bein somethin small......
