quick starter solenoid question
quick starter solenoid question
I am thinking about putting a jegs remote starter solenoid kit in my car, and just wondering if it will work with stock starter. Would I just remove the old solenoid on the stock starter, mout the new one away from the engine, and then wire it to the rest of the stock starter?
Thanks for all of your help

It doesn't really replace the stock solenoid. It just bypasses it. The stock solenoid has the unenviable task of energizing the bendix (that pushes the starter spur gear into place on the flywheel) which then allows current to flow into the starter motor itself and turn the motor over.
I say it's an unenviable task because it has to do this while it is screaming hot (it's inside the starter housing on GM cars) AND it only gets supplied enough power to do it's job from a single small gague wire that comes down from the ignition key. When things get nice and toasty it's possible that the stock solenoid simply fails to adequately energize the bendix. You get nothing. Not even a click.
This is what a remote solenoid will help cure.
HOWEVER...... if you get a "click" from the starter when you turn the key but the starter motor doesn't have the Wheaties to actually turn the motor over..... that's a totally different hot start problem and the remote solenoid won't help with that one bit.

remote solenoid
I have a remote starter solenoid installed on my 91 RS. Id have to say it was one of the best ideas ive had.
the car has a 6 inch rod aluminum headed 383 with ALOT of other goodies. in any case, it has coated hooker super comp header, which presented quite a clearance problem for the starter. I mounted the remote solenoid right behind the battery where the stock wires run to the starter. What i did wwas attach all the power supply wires that normally come from the starter to the remote starter, and now there is only one 1 gauge wire going to the starter. it cleans things up, starts better and theres less wires close to the headers.
