Question on Torque Converter

I am needing to go to a TH350 from a 700R4 for strength reasons. I currently have a Vigilante (expensive converter!). I was told that since it was a TH350 I was going to, I could get something a lot cheaper like a TCI or B&M. I will be getting a Daaco converter with it. Any reason I should get a Vigilante or something comparable again for the TH350? Will it affect my 1/4 mile times?

alot of the times you get what you pay for and it really depends on how stong the motor is and if your using any power adders. Most Convertes for 3 speed trans are cheaper than the 4 speed ones but if you get one with antibollaoning plates and billit stator and so they get pricy too.

Couldnt have said it better. The only thing I have to add is that the Hughes Pro street 3000 stall from summitracing.com runs $270'ish and its an absolutely awesome converter!

My buddy is running a $235 3000 stall behind his 400 RWHP LT1 which is backed up by a TH350. I'd say you don't NEED anything like a Vig. You could easily run somthing less expensive.

Thanks for the input guys. What I am trying to figure out is this: If I ran a vigilante vs. a TCI or a Dacco, are they comparable in terms of performance?

I'll tell you tomorrow (maybe tonight). I HAD a 2400 TCI in my car. That one is probably junk now.. so I bought a 2800 Vigilante. That will be going in tonight.

my guess is that it will be a great difference. But, that is for a 700R4, right?

Yup.

But remember, my buddy is running a cheapo convertor behind a motor that puts down 470 crank hp.

All things here are equal, I'm still using the same 700R4 (just rebuilt now) so the only thing is gonna be a convertor difference behind the tranny.

You'll be ok if you get a cheapo. The real reason for getting high priced convertors is because they do a little somthing to the fins that makes them withstand the beating of NOS / turbo / SC. For a NA car, a little $300 convertor is perfectly fine. Thats how it has been explained to me so far.

Thanks for your help One last quesiton - what was the diameter of the TCI converter? I am assuming the vigilante you are going with is a 9.5"? I have heard that has a lot to do with it also because it is less work to turn.

TCI was a factory sized 12" I believe. Yes the Vig. is way smaller.

My advice would be to call which ever manufacturer you plan on buying from and getting what size/stall they recommend for your cam profile.

yea your best bet is to call up a TC manufacturer and get them to build you a converter for your car based on your cars weight, gearing, motor size and cam profile, the type of induction etc.

the smaller converters are better, they are more stable at high rpms and easier on the trans between shifts etc.
plus you gain a bit with lighter drivetrain components

Angry

My advise... Don't buy a TCI... I had one lasted me about 7 months (this is a second car) professionally installed and they would not give me a warranty.... said it was 6months from time of purchase.... Hell I had the DAM thing for about 2 months before I had it put in....

TCI....

I have a Dayco 2800 I got used for 200.00 was behind my buddies SC LT-1....that was a easy 400rwhp car... I have run juice on this one and beat the crap out of it....

BE Sure to get a oversized cooler

The Vigilante flat out rocks!

I can't tell if the difference is because of the rebuilt trans or because of the different stall speed or the size of the convertors but the Vigilante is great.

here is a compare of a dacco 2100 vs a yank SS3300 done today. this is for a 700r4.

here's the dyno from today. a 25hp/50 ft-lbs gain at 2600 rpm. and stays above the old converter until 4000 rpm. by the way this particular converter will be an exclusive through www.vincihighperformance.com roger vinci said he will give a club discount. so make sure you mention that you are a member of fl-thirdgen.org.
