Question about hoods and a carb'd 350
Question about hoods and a carb'd 350
I'm planning on carbing my stock 350 (after some work), but I have a question before I do it. My '89 Iroc currently has a hood from a V6 3rd gen (due to a front end collision) and I'd like to put a stock Iroc hood back on it. However, I'm not sure if a carb will fit under the hood. Does anyone have any idea if I'll be able to fit a carb'd 350 under an Iroc hood? Thanks
Re: Question about hoods and a carb'd 350
youll need a drop base for the air cleaner, but it will clear.
ive done the swap, and im still running a tiny gay lookin air cleaner b/c im to poor and lazy to find a 3 or 4 inch drop base for it.

Re: Question about hoods and a carb'd 350
It'll work just fine with an IROC Hood. I did a carb on top of a High Rise Dual plane intake(RPM Air Gap), and with a 2 or 2.5" Drop air filter base it still has 1" of clearance. A normal 3X14" K&N Filter is fine. Adding a 1" thick "carb spacer" even works but it took some muscle to close the hood
Doing a shorter intake like a Vic Jr. will give you another added inch of clearance.
Doing a breathable filter lid probably helps a lot also with the drop base. If I knew who made the base I have I'd tell everyone about it but it never had a name or anything on it. It's probably Moroso but it has no angles, just a very large radius to lower itself and it fits around all of the linkage and fuel stuff/fuel bowls perfectly.

Re: Question about hoods and a carb'd 350
my experience is that vic jr. with d.p. holley will clear; add a spacer or get the tall vic or other high single plane manifold and the hood will clear but itll choke your airflow[and hp] way down[we cut away some of the underhood metal just to close the hood]
drop base wont make a difference if theres only 11/2 in of clearance from the top of the carb[we had a milled choke] to the hood.Im sure itll work fine on dual plane designs and shorter single planes though.
Don't mention my name and rank in the same sentence as Michael Fat Ugly Moore!"

Re: Question about hoods and a carb'd 350
Mine clears just fine with a Performer RPM intake and a 1.5" drop base for the aircleaner, with a 14x3" filter. If you use a shorter intake you can probably get by without using a drop base.
