Question about 3rd gen weight.

Wondering what an 86 IROC T-Top car would weight in stock form. Im trying to get mine down to under 3000#s without the driver in it.

As of now, all interior is gone, and one of Summits plastic race seats are going in. The only thing left inside the car right now is the center console and the dash. No Carpet, no seats etc..

Everything except the engine, and the radiator, are gone out of the engine bay. No emmisions no a/c crap. Everything from inside the dash, the heater core, and everything is gone.

What would you think roughly my car would weigh in current form, and can you think of anything else I could pull out?

If you want some good weight reduciton, ditch that heavy rear hatch glass for a rear notchback decklid. Can also get a fiberglass hood, and lightweight wheels. An aluminum radiator, aluminum water pump from edlebrock. There is a big post over on thirdgen.org about people switching the stock metal tank for a plastic 4thgen tank. Can switch to a manual tranny. Can remove your ground effets. Goto a single exhaust outlet instead of dual tips.

Now, if you want serious weight reduction [not recommended for the street], you can go with a full fiberglass body.

And I think I am going with fiberglass fenders cause I found some for like $130 per. And definetley a fiberglass hood cause i need more clerance. Tranny is getting switched. either to a powerglide or a TH-400. I would gain a bit with the 400 I think.

This interests me, what do you mean by notchback decklid? Like a convertable one?

(not to steal your thunder)
notchback decklid came on some trans ams
it sort of makes the back look like the rear of a ferrari testarossa (my fav), lotus esprit, toyota mr2, with the rear pillars sweeping out and holding in a smaller looking rear window. sort of like the fiero rear glass/rear roof. it should make the car a bit lighter due to the small glass

good luck finding one tho

wish i had some louvers

If the car is not going to be driven on the street, you can remove the front and rear inner bumper/crash protection supports. You know, that honeycomb material under the front and rear bumper covers.

Disclaimer: This will remove most of the crash absorbing material from your car. Do not do this if the car will see any street use. I do not take any responsibility if you decide to remove them on your own accord and die from an accident.

I think the fiberglass fenders weigh more than the stock ones.
Stock fenders don't really weigh anything.

I have a Fiberglass hood and fiberglass fenders, Getting soon a tubular k-member, and aluminum heads.. That should be worth some major weight.. Go to Thirdgen.org and there is a weight table or something in the faq's or something..

My car weighs 3025 pounds without driver with cast iron heads, steel fenders and no lexan.

Ditch the heater casing on the firewall, ditch the power steering, ditch the back seat, ditch the carpet, fiberglass cowl hood, aluminum radiator, aluminum 15" Weld wheels and you can get to the point I am at .

you could cut alot of metal out of the front and rear bumpers, i took out just enough so that the plastic shells stayed in their original position, and a fiberglass lift off hood will alow you to remove the hood latch and its supporting brackets. Aluminum heads and block if you have deep pockets.
