Problems with 89 Iroc Z starting...

the car will start right up cold, but once u cut it off (wether u drive it or leave it running for 20 seconds) then you cant cut it on for hours or atleast the next day...when u try to restart, it is turning over and trying to fire but it doesnt.....checked and there is plenty of fuel pressure and checked the msd ignition i have on it and thats all working, tried putting the old chip back in the computer and still wouldnt start, the computer in it isnt factory it is remanufactored could the computer be bad?....i tried replacing the distribator cap, rotor, and control module also.........ran the car at the shop and the only code that came back was the mass airflow sensor, havent tried replacing it yet, but while running the car when i unplugged the sensor, the engine cut off???...been checking wires thinking maybe theres a short somewhere.......anyone that has any ideas or clue let me know!! im startin to run out of options!!!!!!! I just think its odd that if i wait till the next day it will always start right up but once that initial start and u cut it off, it doesnt fire back up..........

The engine will die if you unplug the maf because the computer all of a sudden reads no air when air is still getting in. Freaks out and does this. If you start it without the maf hooked up it should still fire, mine does. Looks like you've started checking all the right places. But I don't think a defective ecm would fire and then not fire for 24 hours. Has the car always done this? or is it a recent occurance?

i ordered a new mass air flow, if it doesnt resolve after that then ill prob just try changin the pump to see, it would just be much cheaper if i knew exactly what it was, but nothing is ever easy...

heat soak into the starter? Do you have headers? Wires frayed from coil to starter? have you checked all that? My friends mustang would do this all the time.. he ended up getting a mini torquer and a heat shield.. all fixed.. maybe you should try that...

You may want to check out my posts on some of the boards I posted this on. Perhaps we'll both get lucky. I am having the same problem you are and have done or at least thought seriously about what you have already done to correct it. Here I'll link you.

Are you getting codes? I wouldn't start throwing new parts on it hopeing to get it fixed. That gets expensive quick. Before spending $160+ on a new MAF sensor I would replace the MAF power and burnoff relays. There only $15 each and fail more often than the MAF itself.
Something else to check. When it's doing it's no start, try unplugging the MAF and see if it'll start.

The MAF has no part in the car actually starting. Its there for "after" it has established running by itself. I also agree. Check other parts before replacing expensive parts like the MAF.

I was talking from experience I had with my car. It would start and immediately die unless I unpluged the MAF sensor. Turned out to be a bad MAF power relay.

Exactly, as soon as your car was started and it was then looking for the reference from the MAF and it wasn't there i.e. false or incorrect reading, the ECM thought that the motor was running out of parameters and shut down.
