Is it possible? True duel exhaust?
Is it possible? True duel exhaust?
I was wonderin how hard it would be to run true duel exhaust from a pair of long tube hedman headers out to the rear of a third gen. I was thinking about 3 inch.
Any opinions?

anything is possible. doubt you'll be able fit two 3" pipes though.
I've always thought about doing the same thing.
Maybe if some was good enough to bend two sets of pipes (may 2 1/2) and weld them together side by side? just a thought

yes, I've been running "True Duals" for a couple of years. Only now I am buying some mandrel bends and replacing the "muffler shop" bends which tho smooth, were somewhat smaller diameter than the pipe.
I ran mine in a "Side-by-Side"configuration, following the factory routing, tack welded together every foot or so.
While I placed my mufflers at the rear bumper like Corvette style, I could've used a chambered or bullet, or round racing style muffler ahead of the axle. I used Edlerbrock RPM's stainless mufflers, they're compact and not overwhelmingly loud. I was restricted to 2.5" b/c of the alxe clearance. If you used 3" tubing you'll have to flatten them out a little above the axleor beat up the floor to keep from "banging"them on the axle at bumps.

Wouldn't be easy because it will all have to be custom bent. Takes a lot of work to do it right with SS and mandrel bends. Why do you want to do it? No one has yet proven that it gets any better performance than a 4 in or 3 in mandrel bent one with SS for less money or same money.
I disassembled my exhaust once from the collectors back to simulate true duals and never noticed anything significant at the track with it and without it. I disassembled the exhaust pieces and put them in the car to keep weight constant.

I have true duals through factory pipes in the next couple days ill go get some pics. As to why the previous owner did this to the exhaust i couldnt tell you but true duals through chambered mufflers on a 5.7L camaro is not only extremely loud but still makes my knees weak ever time i start her up.
duals
how much would you estimate it to cost for a shop to install it?would 2 1/2 in dual pipes be big enough for a 383 stroker to breath through? I just have a 305 in it now, but I'm building a stroker this winter to keep things interesting.
I ran my 383 with and without the rest of the exhaust to simulate the true duals and never noticed anyting significant. You could run a test pipe for testing purposes only and thru a 3 in catback system and be still fine.
Only reason I have seen so far to get true duals is to impress the buddies. They even have 4 in cat back made by mufflex if you really need it.

Ground clearance is the issue. A 4" single and Dual 3" can be done with Long Tube Hookers. Find a good performance shop and they can do it probably. *Duke* on this board just did dual 3" With an X-pipe and Dynomax bullet mufflers. It hangs a little low but it sounds damn good and was pretty cheap compared to a 4" Mufflex or even a Stainless steel 3" cat back like a Borla or Corsa..Goodluck.
Comparing an exhaust made out of Midas pipe is kinda different from SS pipes with mandrel bends. Like it has been said, ground clearence is lessened. If you wanted to go with say 304 SS or something close, I'll bet the cost will be the same or more than a 3 in SLP or 4 in Mufflex. Besides, I have yet to see any gain for a SBC motor.
why would you want true duals....?
i'm very happy with my custom 4" although i was equally happy with my 3". definately love my spintech muffler though. really don't care for the clearance issues with the 4" but that won't be such a problem very soon.

I suppose if I was going with a NO2 and Blown setup, I would go with 4 in as long as I was having custom headers. Unlike ricers, I happen to know that even if you have a 4 in exhaust tip and it sounds loud, if the pipe feeding it is 1 in, there is no performance to speak of. Just what they can brag to to their other unknowing buddies.
duals
i was wondering if anyone could give me a rough estimate of how much a basic system would run. I will be running w/o mufflers (i have the silencing cones for the headers) and a cat (having long ago pulled all the emmisions crap, since my car is emissions exempt in WI.

LPE makes 383 engines that generate 480 ft/lbs of torque and they said to just stick with the 3 in and not waste money on 4 in unless we are making much more.
Otherwise, it is just rice. Becomes like the ricer with a 4 in fart can but a 1 in entrance to the end. Makes noise but no performance.

not sure what this rice you mention is but i had noticeable gains over 3". i agree that unless your pushing some decent power it isn't worth the hassle or expense but anything over 400 at the wheels will definately gain well with it.
surprising answer from lpe although they make some impressive units they also over estimate alot of their numbers. as much as they charge for their pieces i would think they would have a different answer since 4" is so much more expensive.
