Posi rebuild

Posi rebuild

My posi has been slowly slipping away for the past few months. I've seen disc rebuild kits in summit. Is this something that I can do, or is it pretty complicated (has to be professionally done)? Anyone ever done it before? Thanks.

I would pull the rear cover and clean everything. Then change the fluid and put in the posi additive. Sometimes thats all that is needed if you are lucky. Onc time that is all I needed. Or you pull the cover and there is bits of the teeth there then you know it needs more. Remember there will be some clutch material there but a small amount is normal. If the posi unit itself is bad I would buy one if you never rebuilt one before. Yes there is kits tho.

What Differential do you have?

Torsens (gear type) are not rebuidable, The auburn (disc type) is.

Easiest way to tell is if it has a pinion shaft or a retainer paddle.

By the way, mine is an eaton posi (disc) for the 10 bolt, and I've seen rebuild kits for it. I just don't really know how difficult it is to rebuild a posi unit.

Torsens don't slip either... they work until they break. Considering what SLP charges for the zexel torsens, I'd say a new one of those is your best option. I recently installed one in my IROC and I'm real happy with it.

The SLP take off unit works only with 28 spline axles that were in 87 1/2 and newer F-Bodies.

The hardest part is getting the spring (s) in and out other wise it's real easy.

True, but for the same cost as an Auburn diff, you can get the Zexel diff and some Moser axles, and wind up with a much stronger rearend for the same cost. It's definately something to consider. This is the route I took and I'm quite happy. The Moser 28 spline axles are 20% stronger than stock 28 spline axles, which puts them lightyears ahead of the stock 26 splines.
