Performance Upgrades
Performance Upgrades
Helllo all,
Im' new to Camaro's. I used to race a 96 ACR Neon (screenname) but recently sold it. I was just looking for some advice on what performance mods get the best response from Camaro's. The car I have is an 87 5.7L IROC-Z. From what I understand it already has Edelbrock Headers, Hypertech Chip and Airfoil, and K&N Filters. From what I've been researching Subframe connectors seem like they are nessecary if I plan on drag racing, but Iam also looking more so than anything for horsepower increase. Do the basic mods still apply like underdrive pulleys, cold air intake, exhaust, etc. Just looking for an idea on what responds the best with Camaros. Any help would be great. Thanks.

SFC's (SubFrame Connectors) I hear are a must for any 3rd Gen. That's why I'm putting mine on today
Also, they help greatly in cornering/handling too, not specifically drag racing.
There are some free mods such as ram air on www.thirdgen.org look in their "Tech Article" section. Exhaust really wakes these cars up. CAI helps a bit too. I'd start on exhaust first and seeing you've already got headers, just a nice catback will do. Also, if you bought the car used, a good tune up should be in order (New plugs/wires/cap/rotor/etc).
Welcome to the board! Have any pictures of your ride?

I know of someone with a stock car that launches from a stop whenever he can. He had cracks in the paint at certain points and what not.
When I took my SFCs off because I needed to get the frame straight and the cradle replaced I could feel the difference in the corner. Moral of the story is to get SFCs NOW.
The L98 induction sucks so that could go too. and when you do that and exhaust, dump the Hyperjunk and get a custom EPROM.

Cool, thanks for the replies. I think Im' going to start off with maybe Flowmaster American Thunder exhaust or something and then go from there. Im' in univeristy and trying to pay off the loan so Im' not open to the more expensive mods yet. As far as condition goes it's mint. Just over 80,000 kms (around 50,000 mi), never been winter driven, no rust, etc. It's under a car cover right now because I don't plan on driving it in winter. Once spring comes around I'll definately gte some pictures. Thanks again for the help.
Recommendation on SFC's.
Summit sells the South Side Machine SFC's. They are weld in (Don't do the bolt in SFC's), I've had mine on for 3 years and I have virtually no flex in the car.
The way the SSM SFC's are made you can weld to the body seam under your door, just to add more for tie-in points to the car. I ran a full weld down each of the seams and at the main tie-in points, on the ends, to make them a permanent part of the car.
Another point, they are a 2x3" construction so you don't loose alot of clearance. About the only thing that got in the way was the SLP Y-pipe, but w/ some minor adjustment, it doesn't hit the SFC's any more.
