performance chip skeptics/proof

im looking into getting a hypertech chip but i have ran across alot of skeptical information while doing research, i was wondering if anyone has done dyno or has any personal experiences with chipping their car. im only considering it because i have a chip available to me for about 1/4 the usual cost

As long as you are not paying full price for the Hyperjunk chip. I would go ahead and install it if you have a basic stock engine. But note! its NOT going to give you screaming performance. I do use a aftermarket Chip from Fastchip.

Only difference from the Stock GM 350 chip I used to get up and running, was that it changed the shift point to the better & turned my fans on early until 35 MPH.

I know that it added more timing, because after the chip install, I was no longer able to run midgrade gas. Premium only. Being able to go to a 160 stat was a big help; the 'bird always ran better at lower temps. I never took the car to the track before the chip/K&N/Flowmaster changes, but after it did run a best of 15 flat. Local track is at 4,100 ft, so about a 14.3 corrected.

This is on an 89 Formula 350 twin cat. BTW, chip was a gift. Wasn't planning on installing one, as the 'bird is my daily driver. K&N was cause I'm too cheap to buy filters every 3 months (dusty out here), factory muffler made no performance noises, so it had to go.

You can achieve the same results as a hypertech chip by advancing your timing a couple degrees and running premium fuel.

I put in the second level Hypertech chip and I did notice a slight increase in "seat of the pants" performance. This was after installing headers and cat-back plus cold air. Was it worth the full price I paid - no, but a 1/4 of the price and it is so easy to do - why not?

IMHO changing your chip isn't worth it unlees you're custom tuning it for the specific car. If you can get a HyperTrash for next to nothing then go with it, just to turn the fans on earlier. But don't expect any real gains.
