Yesturday my heater controll valve broke, it wasn't leaking much, and wasn't overheating, so I drove it about a mile home. Just as I pulled into the driveway it hit 260 degrees. I replaced the thing today, and now when I drive I get a ton of smoke out the exhaust, I think it has a blue tint to it, but i'm not 100% sure.
I also have some smoke that may be comming from the area of the radiator cap. I'm not sure wheather or not its comming from the cap though.
I just started my car again and it isn't smoking nearly as much, did I crack my heads of block? Great.
It got worse as it warmed up, oil looks fine, the engine bay was filled with smoke too, i'm not sure if that just got in there from the exhaust, or if its somthing else.

One more idea, I have an open element, so when that hose was spraying coolent, is it possible that it just sucked in a bunch of coolent and is still burning it off?

 

Pull the dipstick, see if the oil looks like a chocolate milkshake. If so, there is water in the coolant. Which means anything from a bad intake or head gasket to a crack in a water jacket.

Start there and let us know.

 

The oil is 2 days old and still looks like it. However if it is the headgasket, cracked block, etc it has only been running a few minutes with the problem, so it may be the problem and just isn't noticable in the oil yet.

 

That is a good sign. (clean oil).

I'd pull the spark plugs and take a good look at them and while they are out, do a compression test. That will be the next "clue" as to the health of the motor.

 

u could also spin the motor over w/ the plugs out to make sure theres no coolant in the combustion chamber...even tho u didnt say it smoked white,u could do it just to make sure.

 

I didn't do anything, but I took it for a drive today, and it stopped smoking, and hasn't since.

 

maybe coolant got onto your exaust manifolds and stuff and burned all off. That may have been all it was.

So it soaked through the mainfolds into the pipes?
Some did burn off but I had definate smoke comming out of the exhaust. I'm thinking that I could have sucked the coolent into the motor through the open element, the car only ran about 20 minutes after the installation to the time it quit smoking. It likes to do this every once in a while though, this is by far the worst yet so I believe I do have some kind of problem. It constantly smokes, usually just a little bit though, after I changed my fan switch it smoked for a big, when I got my emmissions it smoked, and on another couple occasions. Then it will just go away and be fine. I just don't want to end up stuck to far away from home for me to get it back with a busted headgasket or somthing. We all know what a shop will charge me for that, I don't even want to think about it.

Opps, sry. That's what happens when you skim through what you read. I didn't see you mention it coming out the exhaust earlier. Well, glad to hear it's ok now. I'd change that oil though, cause oil and coolant don't mix. Just the slightest bit of coolant in your oil can wreek havoc.
