Ok.. what are the possibilities of a rearend holding 300+horse?

Ok.. what are my possibilitie? I will be putting out about 300horse, and I still have the stock rear end. I will use the stock rearend/tranny till next winter when I have some casho saved up.
Possibilies:
1.) Build up my current rear end. Stronger girdle, gears, posi-gears, etc. I dunno.
2.) Zexel Torsen rear end. How strong are they? I think they should be good enough, but I dunno.
3.) LS1 rear end. How much would be needed to make it fit/work?
4.) Fellow cz28'er fills this one in. What is a fourth possiblity?
I would like to keep the stock rearend, but maybe hop it up a bit, what do you all think? Would I be able to convert it to a posi rear end in the mean time?

The stock 10 bolt should hold up to 300 HP.

Maybe a stud girdle, new bearings/seals,weld the axle tubes to the housing.

You can put a posi in your stock rear, thats all a Zexel Torsion is,thats what kind of posi unit they used.

Eaton or Auburn both make posi units,Eatons are rebuildable (clutches).

I destroyed my 10 bolt with 300 horses.

That and 400 foot pounds.

Doesnt his rear end have 26 splines? Everyone that has chimed in has the 28 spline axle. Your rear end is not as strong as the people that have spoken up so it would be a good idea to go to a new one or rebuild yours. If you do not have the money then just stick with what you have until it brakes. I personally found an LS1 rear with complete brake system for only $200 so the bargins are out there if you just look. The only problem that I have now is I need to upgrade my wheels to fit the large brakes under them.

Re: Ok.. what are the possibilities of a rearend holding 300+horse?

Automatics will live longer. I have over 400 RWHP in my 97 T/A (basic same rear) and the rear has lasted with slicks for over 100 passses with sub 1.7 60 foot times. Then on the other hand I tore up my 86 T/As 10 bolt 3.23 with the stock 190 horse 305 TPI...lol

Autos are much kinder to the rears , as is no traction.

Re: Ok.. what are the possibilities of a rearend holding 300+horse?

I think I have 28 splines, but I am not positive. Why would I have 26 but these other guys have 28?
If I were to get an LS1 rear, what would have to be changed? Will it just fit right in, or will there be more to it?
So assuming I throw in some Richmond gears, stud girdle, weld the axles, etc.. my 10-bolt will be fine?

Since its an original 3.23 its a 3 series carrier.

Look over the GM 10 bolt 7.5 and 7.625 gear sets , they will fit your f-body rear.

Re: Ok.. what are the possibilities of a rearend holding 300+horse?

If you could swing it money wise, try to get a 9 bolt rear. My Iroc came with a 9 bolt posi (2.77's ) but I got on ebay and got a 3 series posi and 3.70's for it decently cheap, I even see complete 9bolts on there. I just got my 9 bolt install kit from 9bolt.com and my 3.70's should be going in soon.

Based on the scanned article on 9bolt.com, the 9 bolt is about as strong as a Dana 44. I don't know that from personal experience, but as soon as I get my gears and some sticky tires and go to the track, I'll find out. But everywhere I read, they are stronger than the 10 bolts.

Re: Ok.. what are the possibilities of a rearend holding 300+horse?

So do the number of teeth matter???
I have heard a lot about the 9-bolts.. I thought they were a ford product, and you would have to make them *fit*?
Now, on that Richmond link i gave you guys on jegs.com, does it matter what the rear-end gear is *now*? I ask because instead of 3:23's, I want 3:73's. Are these posi-gears, or is converting my open-diff. a little different than swapping gears?

Re: Ok.. what are the possibilities of a rearend holding 300+horse?

1989 and up are 28 spline axles. 1988 and below are 26. Thing is they started 28 spline axles twoards teh end of 1989, every 1989 camaro ive seen (including my own) has 26 spline axles. If yours is an 89 chances are its a 26. If you have a 89 maro youll have to pull the axles to be sure. 90 and up are all 28 tho.

It should. I have about 300 hp through a 10 bolt and its definitly on its way out. But the stronger 9 bolt should at least last for a while, long enough to save up enough money for something stronger.

The ford rear end you hear about is a ford 9 inch, the other one is the moser 12 bolt which is GM but it is also a 9 inch rear end. The 10 bolt in the later third gens is a 7.5" and i dont know what the 9 bolts are but theyre a bit stronger then the 10's
