My 86 Iroc 305 TPI decided not to start after I put a new transmission in it. Theres spark theres gas...and its cranking. All the emission crap is plugged in. Does anyone have any ideas...Im ready to take it to a shop and let them deal with it. Is there anyway I coil could give weak spark maybe?...Im stumped ...Please Help!!!

Thanks ahead of time,

Re: Not starting after tranny swap

Why would the ground wires come out? They are attached to the head and not the transmission.

The only electrical connections a 700r4 has are the TC lockup, and the Speedo cable if you have VSS. Other than that its the TV cable, and coolant lines.

The engine should fire up even with no transmission bolted up. How are you determining if the engine is getting fuel? Spark is easy, but are the injectors fireing? You can have fuel pressure, but if the injectors don't fire that won't mean anything.

Re: Not starting after tranny swap

hmm, i just swapped in a new trans and headers and some other stuff and mine fired right up. Did you plug in the plugs for ignition module on the back of the distributor? Theres 2 plugs.
did you check
the coil wire
the plug wires
battery cables
ignition module plugs

Thats all i can think of tonight, i just got her done and we are drinkin to celebrate so im short minded now. Good luck.

Re: Not starting after tranny swap

Did you pull the distributor when you did the tranny swap?
Sometimes the cap will hit the firewall and can damage the cap.

Yeh I pulled the distributor to get to the two top bellhousing bolts. Plug wires are new, Battery is good, it has spark...i would check the coil but Ive never heard of a coil giving weak spark...as far as I know they are either good or bad..I could be wrong

Re: Not starting after tranny swap

is the distributor phased right??? you could be getting spark, but is it happening when it's supposed to?? That would be my guess...

I checked the timing a couple of times...maybe the distributor is off by a tooth it sat flush two ways and I tried it both ways...is that what you mean by "phased"?....Im gonna check the timing and spark again...maybe im over looking something

Re: Not starting after tranny swap

By Phased, he means did you stab it 180* out?

When the timing mark is at TDC, it could either fireing #1 or #6. Try rotating the plugs 180* or restabing the dizzy.
