is it normal for my 700 R4 to do this

i have an 83 z28 and the transmission jolts the car when i shift into drive from park or reverse. is this normal for the transmission to be doing that? what needs to be done to fix it if it is a problem?

It is probably not a tranny problem but an idle speed problem. In Park or netural what is your idle at? Anything over 650 for a non modded engine (meaning non-stock cam) is too high and can cause this problem.

yep you hit the nail on the head thats exactly whats wrong im up at around 1000 rpm give or take. why is it doing that in park and neutral? in drive its just fine. could it have something to do with the wireing with the new shifter i put in. i installed a new b&m megashifter and it could be that im not completing the same circuits. let me know if you know what to do about my problem. thanks a lot!

What are you running?
CARB?
TBI?
TPI?

In anycase I don't think it is the new megashifter but then I never installed one, so I can't say for sure sorry.
I would reset the idle, back down to 650rpms in netural, according to what you have.

If you have TBI or TPI I'd recheck the TPS voltage and reset it if needed. Then reset the idle.

If it's an '83 it's definitely carbed (with the exception of major engine swaps) and the high idle will make it jump, but this problem can also be caused by worn-out U-joints or a broken tranny mount. Lower the idle (there's a screw on the side of the carb to adjust it) and if that doesnt cure the problem crawl under and see if there's any play in the U-joints. You can also jack up the car and pry up on the back of the tranny...if it lifts up then you need a new tranny mount (very common problem on these cars.)

It was normal with my last car since it idled at 1000rpm hahaha

This car it doesnt do it because it's at 600-700rpm, and the "way to big" converter...car doesn't even go forward in drive without throttle

my engine idles at 1,200 rpm's in my 91 firebird 400sbc dual 2bbl tBi injected.
my 69 s/s amx idles at 1,700 rpm's dual 4bbl tBi injected.
my 87 GTA idles at 800 rpm's L-98 350tpi.
my 87 z-28 idles at 750rpm's 335tpi storker.
my 69 base camaro with ZL-1 427 idles at 1000 rpm's.
the idle just depends on the car the engine the cam ect.
the s/s amx sound's like it's going to die at 1,700 but it stay's running. the spec's on the 91 firebird 400 can be found on the other post:"91 firebird 400 cam question".

Well, with TPI engines the idle never needs to go above 800 rpms IF the prom is tuned for the engine mods!

That is a BIG IF.

Cause I've seen guys with 383's and Super Charged idling at 1200rpms cause they didn't tune the prom in it. Then they wonder why they only do a 13.5 in 1/4 mile.

yeah the ZL-1 427 copo camaro got crushed a while back.
my grand dad was goinmg for the gold. one night he besat every body. it was the finale run he had to beat a 71 amx with a 401. cake walk right cause the 401's were doggy compared to the 390's.well any way at almost the 3/4 piont of the 1/4mile the 4spd let go in the ZL-1 and the amx walked him by .10 second. so he hualed it home my dad pulled the engine out that night and had it on the engine stand. grand dad went to the bar got trashed came home loaded the the ZL-1 camaro up on his wrecker just the car it's self and junked it. the next day my dad was pissed but he started rebuilding the enging while my uncle went out to fine another car to put the engine in.
All he could fine was a 69 camaro with a 250 inline six in itso in the ZL-1 427 went. and thats how i got stuck with a base camaro with an authentic ZL-1 427 engine sad end to the car.it seem's like a wasted engine in that base camaro but oh well stuff happen's i guess.

the 69 hurst s/s amx with the 390 crossram and the 900cfm 4bbl TBI's currently walk's all over the ZL-1 427, that don't bother me any cause i like the amx better it's #02 out of 53 built, and
it's worth more than the 69 camaro cause the amx is all there all i got from the 69 ZL-1 is the motor in a base 69 camaro body. so i'm sure thats almost worthless.
