Need your opinion

Is it possible for this engine to get to 300hp?

IT is in a 1980 vette, stock L-48 rated at 190hp. The engine has 8.2:1 compression and a cam with a lift of .390/.410 lift.
My friend thinks by adding just headers and exhaust,an intake, and timing it can make 300hp. With the stock cam and heads. Is this possible, a 110 hp gain from those mods, or another overzealous vette owner?

Intake and exhaust would put that motor around 230-240HP, tops. No way he will make 300 without going into the motor or using some sort of forced induction.

A motor that old could probaly use a refreshing rebuild anyway.

Pull out the motor, get the heads machined a little and put in flat top pistons to bump your compression up to about 9.5:1. Then add a more modest cam with say .470 or so lift.

Then do your exhaust. With probbaly about a grand spent you can easily be making more than 300 hp. It would be really hard to get over 300 hp with such a wimpy cam and compression.

But with a better cam, and a little head porting, you can be thre easily.
