Question Need help

Hello. I am new to this forum and I need some help. I have a '91 Z-28 305 TPI . Suddenly the engine lost power when accelerating and started to backfire when under load in low gear. (auto transmission). New sparkplug wires, checked spark plugs looked OK. Noticed the timing at idle (700 RPM) was about +16 degrees.
In order to check the initial timing, opened the connector in the tan wire between the ignition module and the ECM. Static timing went to +6 degrees. I tried the car and ran much better with the ignition module disconnected. This makes thinks that the ignition module is screwing up the timing. Could this be the problem or would there be a sensor that could be sending bad info to the ECM which causes the ECM to want to advance the timing.
I am stumped . Could someone guide me in the right direction.
Thanks
Rick
