Name that tune? rear end noise?

Hey, i have a 1988 IROC-Z, when i'm driving at a constant speed or i get on the accelorator at all, say about 30+mph, there is a whining sound comming from the rear end, and also, anything under 30mph, i hear a clicking noise.. What is it? Spider Gears? I still have Posi and firm shifts, just that dang noise.. What is it and how much to fix it roughly? Thanks guyz..

does it go away when you coast (let off the gas to slow down) ?

when i'm driving at like 30+ mph, and i let off the gas the noise does stop, however if i'm under 30mph it will still click.. for for some reason when its over 30 i dont hear clicking, maybe everythings just spinning too fast.. Any ideas?

Kinda sounds ike mine when the ring and pinion ate it. Mine was torn up pretty bad when I took off the differential cover. But it never made a skip in persormance yet, just bad noises. So I guess it will work right up till when I finnaly decides to tottaly quit working if you leave it be.

It might not be a bad idea to pull the differential cover and check the oil for metal flakes. If you find much, you know you've got a problem. If you're lucky (or maybe unlucky?), you might even be able to see the problem.

Sounds like you have some cracks in your pinion gear.
Definately pull the cover and inspect the ring and pinion.

Hmm bummer, this whole time i was thinking that it was just the spider gears.. So i guess if its the Ring and Pinion gear i should probly just upgrade my gears while i'm at it right? 3:73's sound good to you guyz?

Ya, if it turns out to be the gears, 3.73 sounds good.
