My speedometer.....
My speedometer.....
I just got my transmission rebuilt, and they said that my speedometer was not working, which I knew, and they said without it, you will burn your transmission up. They said, something about the torque converter dumping oil everywhere....I dont know, Anyways, I need a speedometer for an 87 Camaro. Does anyone know how much they cost or how hard they are to put in? Do I have to get the milage authentisized or whatever?
do u need a speedometer, speedometer cable,or speedometer gear,or all of them? the gear goes into the tail end of the tranny and the speedo. cable hooks into it and runs to the speedo. itself. the speedo. u might find at a junkyard,im not sure if u can buy it new at a Chevy dealership or not,but i know u can buy the gear and cable there b/c ive done it.
hope this helps

disconnecting the speedo will not burn up your trans, i know a few people who did it so they wouldnt register miles on their car
disconnecting the throttle valve cable can damage your trans though

He said something like this......
When your driving down the road, the oil leaves your torque converter or something like that and goes somewhere. Making your torque converter get hot. Well, stop and go driving around town it's ok because when you stop it goes back to the torque converter, but when on a long trip on a highway, the oil leaves it and since you dont stop, it never returns to the converter, so it gets insanely hot and oil goes everywhere, and you just burnt your trans.
Does this make sense to anyone? Cause this is just what the guy told me, and he said he wouldnt give me my warranty on my tranny till I have my speedo workin.

Ummm.....that's retarded. I can sort of see how a broken speedo could keep the torque convertor from locking up (on a car with an electronic speedo,) which could lead to heat build-up.....but in a car with a mechanical speedo that's just totally unreasonable.
In a 700-R4 the front pump constantly cyles fresh pressurized fluid into the torque convertor and internal mechanisms.....it operates directly off engine power via the torque convertor housing. That's why the snout of a torque convertor has that slot in it - to drive the front pump. How can the fluid run out of the torque convertor when the engine is turning and causing the front pump to keep the fluid pressurized? The only time the fluid runs out of a torque convertor is when a car sits for a long while (not running of course) or when you take the torque convertor out. It sounds to me like he's looking for an excuse not to give you a warranty on that tranny.

Well, the only reason I believed him is b/c I asked him what would happen if I didnt get it fixed, and he told me it would keep getting hot alot and after a few months, he's seen cases when the oil just went everywhere out of the tranny. And.....3 weeks before my tranny went out, I had an incident where alot of oil spilled everywhere and my car went up in smoke(due to it hitting the exhaust) I never did find the prob. I thought it was a leaky valve seal, then I thought maybe a leaky oil pan, but it never happened again. Soo....I dont know I kinda figured he was right.
Why would not having a speedo in the car affect whether oil gets transferred around?
Besides, it would be much smarter to always have the oil circulating... I don't see why the cars would have the oil move away from the torque convertor while moving..

If your tranny did somehow manage to blow a fitting or something then ALL of your tranny fluid would blow out the side and the trans would last maybe 30 seconds, not 3 weeks. And you would have to blow a fitting for it to happen.....tranny fluid doesn't just magically appear on the outside of the trans and it's not like there are big holes in the side of the case where it can spray out (unless you've blow it up already.) You definitely need to see about getting a refund.....and possibly look into hiring an attorney.
Now...if your car has an electronic speedo then he may be right about it heating up but it won't be because of fluid going out of the convertor. If the computer never tells the torque convertor to lock up (because it doesn't know you're going fast enough for that) then it will generate excessive amounts of heat at highway speeds and that can cause it to go. But if you have a mechanical speedo then he's flat-out bull****ting you.

Still shifts fine, and doesn't leak, again (havn't changed anything)
So yes, it does magically appear outside :P
