My car is in the shop getting the stuff in my sig installed. They called me yesterday to say everything is in the car but wont idle. And when they rev it up the engine pops.
Its a Scoggin Dickey crate TPI engine. It has Vortec heads. I had PCMforless burn a piggy back custom chip. I told them I was going to use SLP runners but the shop couldn't use them and had to use the stock ones. The SLP runners kept binding up on them and the screws would go all the way in. And the adj. fuel reg would not fit so they used the stock one.
Could these items be enough to make it run this way? I know very little about engines. Ask away and I'll answer any questions. They adjusted the valves just to eliminate that possibility.
By the way, the 2001 WS6 trans am driveshaft bolted right in my car with no mods.

What kind of shop is this? They need to check basics, like making sure the timing is right, plug wires aren't crossed, and the fuel pressure it correct. I certainly hope they have access to either All Data, or reference manuals they can get the info from. Ask them to make sure they are using 350 tpi injectors, not 305, make sure they are using the correct prom and ecm...just check the basics. Doesn't sound like anything too serious.

Doesn't sound like they are 3rd gen guys.

My SLP runners did not fit perfectly either till I lightly massaged them with a high speed grinder. IIRC the fuel rails hit the runners. Most repair shops are part swappers. To them if it did not come factory it doesn't fit. Repair shops are profit oriented to the point that they don't have nor want to make the time to get involved with hotrodding. Sometimes in hotrodding you have to use fabrication skills. This is why most of us are DIYers. Most of the components I installed on my ride required some sort of fab skills.

The owner of the shop is a good friend of mine. Its a boat place that builds high horsepower supercharged carb. boat engines. They are not fuel injection guys and were very upfront about that.
I am using 350 injectors. They are 24# excel. Plug wires did check properly installed. And the computer chip is properly installed.
It doesnt sound to bad to me either "Pneumatic_Tire". They are going to try some other stuff after consulting with their occasional fuel injection guy. This project has taken over a year to get together because of my crazy work schedule. I figured we would hit a few potholes along the way. Thanks so far. Keep thinking and posting some thoughts. Its all fun!
Good news of major parts that fit with no mods:
1) Edel. headers part #EDL-68723
2) 52mm TB part #BBK1534
3) Mad Dog stage 2 Punisher 700R trans
4) 2001 T/A WS6 alum. driveshaft
5) TPI crate motor #SD360VTPI
6) Hurst dual gate shifter #HUU-2920000
So the only prob. they had was the Runners and the BBK fuel pressure reg. not fitting. All the rest fell into place. Just in case anyone is thinking of getting any of the above parts.

They actually did that but were afraid to go to far. I wonder if the Edel. runners are an easier fit?Originally Posted by 92BLKL98
I had to remove .200" from the 4 fuel rail mount bosses. Not a big deal but it worked for me.

They need to make sure that they have the base timing set correctly. There is a brown wire connector on the pass side strut tower that needs to be unplugged before the timing can be set correctly. I would guess that it should be set to 6*-8* with the wire unplugged with that tune.
Also, did you tell the chip burner that they were Accel 24# injectors or that they were 350 Injectors? 350 Injectors were 22#'ers and the 24's actually liked to be set at about 25.75# in the chip to work correctly in my 350 with stock fuel pressure.

Ok cool. I'll pass that on. I told the PCMforless guy that I had Accel 24#. Thanks a bunch.Originally Posted by RedIrocZ-28

That brown/tan colored wire by the way is just a single wire plug. Its for the electronic advance. Trust me, it MUST be unplugged for the timing to be set correctly. If they, on the off chance, knew that the car needed to be set to 6* advanced and did not have that wire unplugged, its likely the actual timing is set about 10-15* retarded from what it needs to be.

Hmmmm. We just cant figure out this idle problem.
I've had it. I am going to call the shop in the morning and tell them to remove all the computer stuff and anything to do with fuel injection.
I'm going to get a nice carburator. So what kind should I get? I can put a carb. on a Vortec motor can't I? I'll search Summit now but please inform me of a good street friendly performance carb.
And I guess I'll be selling the parts that go with the TPI. Such as:
1)my custom piggy back chip from PCM4less (programmed for my signature)
2)whole computer for an L98 1987 (used original)
3)24# Exel inj. (used)
4)SLP runners (New, no miles just test started) part#SLE-20002
5)BBK 52mm TB (New, no miles.........) part#BBK-1536
6)BBK adj. FPR (New, no miles..........) part#BBK-1714
Just PM me if your interested in the above parts.
EDIT: 7)Scoggin Dickey Vortec TPI intake part#EDL-3817 (Installed but no miles) new $460

kinda a rash decision to make after you've bought and attempted to install all of those things.
It definitely sounds like its a timing problem, have them re-install the distributor w/ the motor at TDC, sometimes it will be a tooth off, or it could be 180 out, reset the timing w/ the advance wire unplugged, check the camshaft for correct installation.
